Cash? | Pad Patter 9.15.15

Aren't checks very fraud sensitive? Like if you write me a check for $10, isn't it very easy for me to add another 0? Or fake a signature?
Now I may be showing my age here as well because I really don't understand how these things would still be working in a time like this. I just checked and my bank is only talking about checks from international people and businesses. If I would get a check and issue it at my bank I had to pay €27,50. Seriously. Also banks don't have to check the check for authenticity. I find it incredible that checks are still kinda normal in other places in the world while it has become really unusual in mine.
And Lorry, that sounds amazing! I want those kinds of technology here in my country! I think it's already coming because I can already pay with my phone in some supermarkets. And the other day I was went to a department store and they didn't accept any cash anymore, only debit, credit or gift cards.

I very seldom have cash and I do write checks fairly often, mostly for groceries, school lunches, and such. I don't have a debit card and probably never will. I won't get in to the long story of how my ex-husband turned me against any kind of atm or debit card, but I also know myself well enough to know that if I had one, I would spend more money. If I am forced to write a check or pay cash, I am less likely to impulse buy. I get cash from the bank when I know I am going to need it and if something comes up, I use my credit card. I also use it for eating out and some shopping because of the rewards and cash back I earn, but it gets paid off every month!

We haven't had a cheque book in probably 5 or 6 years at least. I think Australian baks are slowly getting rid of them. I have a debit/credit card for day to day shopping and a credit card linked to paypal that has a smaller limit for internet use and overseas travel. We direct debit most of our regular bills.

I still carry cash around for food mostly (i used to also pat for all my craft supplies with cash so that they didn't show up on our cc bill :whistle - but now I am all digi, much cheaper and all paypal - win-win)

The amount is also written out in words, and it's not as easy to make "ten dollars" looks like "one hundred dollars". However, checks are typically processed by a machine, so if you write in the extra 0, it will probably transfer 100 and the person who wrote the check would have to complain about it and have it changed. They could then look at the check and see that someone changed it, but it would have still been a huge pain in the butt for everyone. It's hard for me to understand why they are still used at all!

And yes, I loooove MobilePay. You can even use your phone to pay at vending machines! The only downside is when we travel somewhere else, because we are always forgetting that we suddenly need cash again.

same here on the nearly never cash on me.....and I should really try make a change on that...not that I am leaving the house LOL, but everything I pay with cards!!!
I stopped paying by cheques last year, I would send a cheque to my carer and to the payroll agency, but the council changed the system to pre paid cards, so I didn't need it anymore.....
I really should make a change though, and go shopping at the street markets... cook a bit more, I'm working on it all :)

Oh, and I know that I'm showing my age, but seriously? A cashless society? Doesn't it seem like science fiction come to life sometimes????

I think I am older than you.... I am always saying I am living in The Jetson's time (minus flying cars, but how long till we get those? LOL), which I thought could never happen in my life time.
I used to watch Star Trek and also think the communicators were something that could never happen.....
I am from vinyl times, black & white television..... things we do now I would honestly be spooked and lau8gh at you even when I was in my 20s...I knew a girl who worked in IBM in the early 80s, and I went to see their computer.....it was a whole room, and it wasn't small.....

I'm so grateful for technology, but, as with everything in this life, it has it's pros and cons..... there is always the good and bad side .....I has a time in which I didn't have good credit check, and was almost impossible to buy holidays or travel insurance if you didn't have a card... :( this was 15 years ago......
I wonder how much advance will happen in my life time, I wont laugh at ANY thing people say... LOL

I'm still waiting for the Jetson's maid and the push-a-button-and-food-pop-out machines so I don't have to cook and clean. :giggle

But the other day I did see a video where they've actually created a hoverboard (Lexus), so who knows what we will see next.

I always wanted the tube Mrs. Jetson went into where she pushed a button and came out all dressed and coiffed after getting out of bed.

And I think I'm older than a lot of you ... I remember watching The Wizzard of Oz on my friend's brand new color tv for the first time - and being so surprised when I found out that the Land of Oz was in COLOR!

I never seem to have cash. In fact, my son begged me tonight to go get some cash tomorrow before joining him for lunch so that he can buy a treat. They are allowed a sweet treat if they eat their lunch on Fridays. So far, I have not been able to remember to bring cash, but I am hopeful for tomorrow. :giggle

I use the bank card for everything. It's just easier to have the one card tucked into my phone case since my phone is always with me.

The Lexus hoverboard only works if you're in a park with a bunch of magnets in the ground, though. Not quite the Pit Bull we've been waiting for. ;)

Never use checks anymore. Pay bills online and use debit almost everywhere else. Customers do pay my husband by check often, so they aren't quite obsolete yet.

To address folks concerns on checks, newer technologies reading checks could detect if an extra zero was added or the amount written was not the same as the amount entered in numbers. Like cash readers, they are very sophisticated now. I just don't use them because swiping is so much faster than writing....

I was just thinking about this as Bugga recently lost a tooth and the tooth fairy was unprepared with actual cash money. I rarely carry cash anymore! If I know about something in advance I may have some on hand, but I primarily use my debit card (which feels the same as cash to me.)

I know that tooth fairy issue. I ended up going to the bank & getting $10 in gold coins. That stash is kept in my jewelry box for such occasions.

As for carrying cash, nope, never. The only time my account has ever been hacked was when some person(s) made fake checks. I suspect that was from some data breach of bank routing numbers. The name on the checks didn't match mine. Because everything's processed digitally by the bank, my account was wiped out. There's no actual person to check the name on the check unless there's a complaint. Amazing.

mmm, don't know...
me >>>>>>>> born 1958- turned 57 this month , on the 5th.
I'm quiet sure Kim is younger, and if I am to go by the look of your avatar, I would say you too are younger :)

Jess: how horrible :( I resist online banking pretty much because I fear so much hackers... I have a pre paid credit card for shopping online, that way you don't spend money you haven't got, and as I never have too much money in it...if they hack me, not much they can take!!!
were you able to recover any money?

In Belgium you need cash... market, bakery, even some restaurants don't except cards. Just like in the Netherlands, cheques are out! Never used one! And most of the stores don't except credit card.
