Pad Patter: 1/21 - Air Travel

I love flying. But mostly because I love to travel. I would have no problem having a job that required it.

:lmao

Note to self: Never fly with Angie. We will have the whole plane convinced we're going down!

No kidding. Usually if I can look around and everyone else is calm, I can talk myself down off the ledge. But don't let me find one other person who is white knuckling it like I am!!!

I love flying! My first ever flight was from the UK to Australia when I was 11! My grandad took me there to visit family and I always I'd if I could do that flight I could do anything, it was 26/28 hours with a short stop in Singapore.

Since then I have traveled to various places in the USA, Morocco, Tunisia, Cuba, The Algarve, Spain and France

Ty is almost 6 and has been to Morocco, Tunisia, Cuba and France with a holiday here in the UK too

We all love to travel, but this year we are concentrating on decorating the house hopefully, so no holiday, home or abroad

I might have a drink in the airport waiting to board, but other than that I'm pretty calm about the whole thing.

This!

And for some reason it doesn't matter if my flight is at 3 in the afternoon or 6 in the morning, it's nice to start the trip off with a drink at the airport bar LOL

...I do better when my kids are with me because at least then if I plunge to fiery death, I'm not leaving them without a mother. Egad. Morbid, right?! LOL ... :giggle

Laura...
I used to make travel arrangements for a boss that felt this way. At first I was dumbfuzzled by the point of how they traveled but after it was explained to me the light bulb went on and I felt a little naive. Anyway... they would only fly as a complete family. If that was not possible then one parent stayed behind or traveled at a later time - just in case.

Laura, you sound exactly like me except for the fact that I haven't flown since I had kids! I never cared before - I knew if I died the world would go on LOL. Now I always feel like if I flew, there is a chance I'd die and my kids would have no mother. Terrible to think but its all I can focus on. SO I probably won't fly till they are all adults!

I hate, hate, hate flying. HATE it. But I do it fairly often...however, it requires a combination of prayer, pep talks and prescription drugs. I do better when my kids are with me because at least then if I plunge to fiery death, I'm not leaving them without a mother. Egad. Morbid, right?! LOL The flights to CHA were hideous. VERY turbulent...like the kind where even the flight attendants are buckled in and totally silent, which is never a good thing. The lady sitting next to me was scared too. So we ended up holding hands for most of the way. Hahahahaha. I'm such a chicken. If DH is with me and, especially if we are flying overseas, I just take enough Xanax to pass out. It's better that way. :giggle

I take plenty of drugs too and it's a MUST to take a picture before the plane leaves the gate and once we are in our seats. If am by myself I ask the person next to me. I have never missed a picture prior to take off and don't want to now!!

One flight coming back from Arizona was so bad....they were passing out dry cleaning vouchers to people because drinks where being spilt on people. We did the whole take one down pass it around for snacks and drinks b/c the flight attendants couldn't leave their seats either!! It was bad!!!

I flew in to a small airport once and it was so foggy they couldn't see the runway until they were right up on it...Yikes! Start about scared. That flight has already been cancelled three times and they routed us to another airport which was still bad!!

I totally had those thoughts on our flight to Houston last month - Eric and I had the kids flying with us for the first time and I kept thinking that if the plane went down, we'd all go down together!!

When we flew home from Vegas for SIL's wedding in 2009, we flew home with FIL, MIL and Eric's other sister as well, and I kept thinking, omg, half the dang family will be wiped out!!

I also play out the Flight # in my head to see if it "sounds like" one that would be on the news.

So I'll say "Flight #481 from Cleveland to Orlando has crashed" and see if it has the newsy ring to it.

I think I need some therapy.

Omg Angie you are as bad as I am! I always look at the flight number to see if its an ominous number like 13 or 911. I highly doubt they use either of those numbers because of whackos like me, but I will not book a flight if the number is weird.

Am I the only one who researches what type of airplane it is before booking? It's one of the reasons I like to fly Southwest- I always know what kind of plane I'll get.

I used to be okay with turbulence until that Air France flight crashed into the ocean a few years ago. Now I think of that flight on every bump.

Ugh. Life would be so much better if we'd invest in some of those super fast trains. I'd totally go everywhere on a train.

i'm supposed to love flying .. ^__^

but it makes me really .. bleh. I used to fly very frequently when i was younger (stand by.. uncle worked for AA and at that time that meant we all flew for free, they've reduced who can get those tix now). I much prefer flying in Bf's tiny plane angie :p the big ones are the ones that make me feel like i'm going to DIEeeeee.

I used to love flying, but then once I had to do it when the boys were small, it was very stressful. Add into that several awful flights with lots of turbulence, kids freaking out and screaming, I started having panic attacks.

I just had to get over it. I fly every 6 - 8 weeks, and now I just go. I've got my routine down, I'm calm and relaxed, and have no more white knuckle experiences during take off. That being said, I haven't had really bad turbulence where things are being thrown around the cabin. If I have that again, I might start feeling nervous.

My bil is a small plane pilot, and even flies bigger charters around Alaska. My dh flies with him when he's up there, and that freaks me out. I just can't do that. The 13 seater I flew in from Dallas to Wichita once was the worst experience of my life. thought.I.was.going.to.die

I always used to have the Xanax with me, but never took it because I need to drive a rental car when I get there!

If I could knock myself out, I totally would! :)

I don't even let my husband drive the car if I'm in it. I'm sure as hell not getting on a plane he's controlling. :rofl

this is probably for the best.. I've met quite a few pilots now. and they all drive like kamakazi's.. they;ve got this mentality that hey.. I fly for a living.. no one's killed me up there yet i'm not going to die on the road.
okkkkkkkkkkk bucko.
