Happy National Animal Crackers Day!

I grew up grocery shopping with my dad and he would buy me the little boxes of animal crackers so I’ve always loved them.

Have you ever had animal crackers?
Do you prefer your crackers salty or sweet?
Have you ever made crackers at home?

I think crackers have a different meaning in the USA to what they have here in the UK. Crackers are NEVER sweet. Here crackers are a crispy savoury biscuit normally served with cheese. I guess your sweet ones are more like English biscuits (totally different to biscuits in the USA). I've made plenty of English biscuits, but never had any success at making homemade crackers.

I have always loved animal crackers.. as a kid i was thrilled as the box was a circus car and it had the string so it was like a little purse!!

@Angela Toucan you are right.. our animal crackers are like a plain digestive cookie/cracker that is in the uk..our crackers for the most part are savory or plain as well to eat with cheese. My hubby always wonders why they call them animal crackers as they are more like plain cookies!

oh and PS yes we gave made crackers at home.. savory cheese flavored ones.. we made them once (last year i think) and i made a page of it!

I had to google it. Yes we had small animal shaped biscuits/crackers like that, the kids loved them when they were small. I am with Angela, generally crackers are crispy savoury "biscuits" eaten with cheese. My kids also loved zoo biscuits when they were small. These had a hard sugary layer with an animal stenciled on it in white icing.

Thanks for teaching me about English crackers and English biscuits.

My husband wanted to try making cheesy crackers once. I don’t remember how they turned out so my guess is they weren’t good.

I love the string boxes too! I never thought it was like a purse because I was a huge tomboy growing up so that would not have appealed to me lol I read today that they added the string so it could hang on Christmas trees but I did not verify the truth of that statement.

How did your homemade cheese crackers turn out?

I think I’ve had something similar to the zoo biscuits but it’s been a very long time. I’m glad your kids enjoyed them.

Re the crackers.. good but it was jyst a one time deal :)

We had the same childhood Monica! My dad would sometimes buy me the little circus train box with the string at the grocery store - I don't think they make them like that anymore, at least not sold at the grocery store. I like all kinds of crackers, Cheez Its are my favorite. I've never attempted to make them at home!

I love that we had the same childhood Lynnette!

Cheez Its are definitely a favorite in our house.

They don't make them like that. So sad. But I did find a multi-pack package through Wal-Mart recently. No sweet little box with a string though. It's terrible, but I really love them with a cold Coke. McDonald's used to have their little box of cookies that tasted like animal crackers/cookies, and I loved them.

Yes plain ones as a kid but now they are iced here (and full of gluten!) so haven't had any for a good 30 years.

Do you prefer your crackers salty or sweet?
@Angela Toucan said it best as it's the same here in New Zealand.

I haven't yet but it's on the plans eventually as a local manufacturer/grocery store has recently discontinued making my favourite seedy rice crackers and while I've found a replacement of sorts I don't love them nearly as much and they are about double the price. Luckily I have plenty of recipes to try and buying my crackers was only ever temporary while I settled into being gluten free and battling daily fatigue.

Ha! I have a giant tub from Costco on my counter right now! I have always loved animal crackers! A piece of my childhood. I also loved the animal cage box with the string!

Have you ever had animal crackers? Oh yeah. I loved them as a kid. My grandma would always get those for us as a treat.

Do you prefer your crackers salty or sweet? Usually salty. We really only buy crackers around thanksgiving or christmas holidays and have them with cheese as a snack.

Have you ever made crackers at home? Nope. I don't love them enough to put the work into making them. Lol.

YUM!!! I loved Nabisco animal crackers (really cookies) in the circus boxes as a kid. Bought them for my kids and grandkids when they were little. I occasionally buy a big jar of the Stauffer's animal crackers.

Oh and here's one of the original "string" boxes ...

I bet they’re delicious with a cold Coke! Give me all the sugar lol

I hope you find a recipe you like or that your grocery store brings them back for you.

Yay for another animal cracker lover!

My sister always does crackers and cheese for holiday get togethers. We also like them for road trips (with the super unhealthy canned spray cheese of course).
