Animal Crackers | Pad Patter 4.18.24

YUM!!! I loved Nabisco animal crackers (really cookies) in the circus boxes as a kid. Bought them for my kids and grandkids when they were little. I occasionally buy a big jar of the Stauffer's animal crackers.

Oh and here's one of the original "string" boxes ...

Yep that’s the string box I remember! So good!

I hope you find a recipe you like or that your grocery store brings them back for you.

Unfortunately after weeks of inquiries with the manufacturer/importer/grocery stores (and a bit of detective work among a couple of gluten free Facebook communities) they are definitely gone but for now I've found something acceptable, I just won't buy them as often

Have you ever had animal crackers? Yes, I occasionally buy the big container of them at Costco.

Do you prefer your crackers salty or sweet?
Saltly

Have you ever made crackers at home?
Yes, we have a dehydrator and made healthy versions of crackers in it before. Haven't done it in a long time though.

I love all the crackers, but especially cheesy ones. I've made one or two kinds, but would rather just buy them as it is a lot of work and my family eats them too quickly LOL

The circus animal crackers in the USA are called 'crackers' because the dough has layers. So even though they are slightly sweet they are technically by baking standards a cracker and not a cookie.
Another interesting fact I found on google was that they were originally sold in large tins and barrels, but PT Barnum had the idea to sell them in small boxes with a string so they could be used as ornaments on Christmas trees.
It is hard to find the original version of them in stores now. I always liked the McDonalds cookies because they were like the original circus crackers.
