Christmas dinner | Pad Patter 11.29

Thank you so much for sharing the Swedish typical menu, so interesting. I love fish, and salmon is my favorite, so I will check out some of the dishes.
Please try the porkkanalaatiko and the perunalaatiko that are part of the Christmas caseroles. For the carrot caserole (porkkanalaatikko), I fried fine chopped onion in a little bit butter, well actually not completely fried but just few seconds, and then I add this on top, before to place into the oven, then and I add crumbs and some sliced butter here and there, and place into the oven, till done, and really add a great taste the onion, my aunt gave me this tip.

Those look really yummy!

I don't really do a Christmas dinner, so no real menu. I fix a bunch of appetizers and finger foods and we graze all day. My grown kids have so many other places they need to go, it's just easier that way. I love it!!
I tried a couple of new things last year - Crab Stuffed Mushrooms and Bacon Wrapped Chicken Bites. They were both soooo good!!
Those sound super good! We do appetizer day on New Years. I might try those!!

On actual Christmas, we usually have either pho or brisket and sticky rice. Leading up to Christmas we have a "traditional"-- (I'm not sure how traditional it actually is) -- Danish Christmas. I don't know how to pronounce any of the Danish words though. We always have a pork roast with crackling, Danish red cabbage and sugar browned potatoes. It's one of my favorite meals of the year! I make the sugar browned potatoes several times a year. I love them!

That sounds delicious, thank you so much for sharing. Sugar browned potatoes, first time that I heard about them, I thank for sharing the recipes, for sure I'm gonna give them a try.

We usually do steak, baked potatoes and a big salad along with some appetizers and a veggie tray. I bake lots of little dessert bites- mini pecan pies, mini key lime pies, fudge, cookies, etc. We have Christmas day just the family at home, so we do the steak as everyone likes it. When we gather with my extended family we have various things- one year we did the Italian Feast of 7 Fishes, one year we did prime rib, one year we did a beef tenderloin in salt crust, one year we did Beef Wellington. We do turkey at Thanksgiving and ham at Easter, so usually some kind of beef for Christmas.

Lol I know what you mean @Karen it happened once, and I cooked some rice with mushrooms from a can, and I don't remember what kind of weird salad I did, but I tried to be cool, lol, and I learned that the best is have some breads, lactose free cheeses, some fresh veggies, like cucumber and tomatoes, cookies and prepare coffee or tea, in such cases.

My sisters and I pretty much follow our childhood Christmas menu: turkey, stuffing, Ocean Spray jellied cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes with gravy, peas, corn, Waldorf salad, hot rolls, and dessert.
This is exactly like my Christmas dinner growing up, down to the jellied cranberry sauce. Our vegetable was a green bean dish covered with French onions. Sometimes we would have broken glass dessert which was basically a bunch of different colored jellos cut in squares and mixed with dream whip.

Mom never made that green bean casserole even though it was popular back then. I finally had it once and wasn’t impressed … I think it was made with cream of mushroom soup, then top with a can of French fried onions.

What a fun thread! Some of these recipes sound amazing!

I switched out those marshmallow sweet potatoes for some GOAT CHEESE sweet potatoes when my daughters grew up, but it was mostly because my husband is diabetic. I'm not a fan of goat cheese at all, but these are delicious. SKIP the thyme or sage whatever it is she calls for - it is too leathery. Here is a link if I'm allowed to post it. https://www.theanthonykitchen.com/m...at-cheese-and-honey-walnuts-side-dish-recipe/

The downside is they have the exact consistency of mashed potatoes unless you mash them by hand so they still have some lumps. Too many mashed products at one meal.

That's interesting. I remember when I was kid, that my mom served some dessert made with jellos, exactly like your described, but she added pineapple and condensed milk and cream.

Previously we have done a hot turkey with hot veges, gravy, stuffing and salads when we've all been together but I think now days as its only going to be my mum and I on Christmas Day together, we will have a smaller dinner but with roast chicken instead.

I've searching for new ideas and recipes in Pinterest, because I'm already planning our Christmas dinner, because when the time comes I have so many ideas, that I end up making the same menu from years past (roast pork, casseroles, mashed potatoes, gravy, salad and cake), and I've always wanted to try something new, so I think it would be fun, if you share your ideas, a menu, etc.
Do you prepare the same menu every year?
Have you ever tried to prepare something new?

My Mom always made Lasagna (we are not Italian, but hers was the best!!).

I make Shrimp Scampi for my Hubby every year and Sticky Toffee Pudding for desert!

For Christmas Eve we do snacks/grazing and watch "It's a Wonderful Life" since it is just the two of us, it is perfect! As I get older I do not like a big mess. I tend to like quiet! LOL

Yup that is it.. I stopped making that at Thanksgiving many years ago. I prefer just plain green beans or maybe sprinkled with a little bacon bits :)

We switched over to Grilled/Roasted Brussel Sprouts w/ a Balsamic Vinegar drizzel now for Thanksgiving instead of Green beans.

Love shrimps and sticky toffee pudding, so delicious combo! Merry Christmas my dear sweet friend to you both! :tree

Love to read all those delicious menu's. Here in the Netherlands gourmetten (I don't know if there is a English word for it) is very popular and we do it also every year with christmas. We all cook for ourselves, have all kinds of meat of vegan, vegtables and in the little pans you can make a pancake, egg of what you like to eat. All with bread and sauces. So everyone can make what you like and I only have to get the groceries. My kids love this since they where young and still want to do this every year.

This is what it looks like (picture from the internet)
