JANUARY 8: Scrap One Color/Hue

Hello challenge participants! I am super duper excited to host this challenge!! The rule for this challenge is simple, EVERYTHING on your page must be the same color/hue scheme. You can choose any color, but you CANNOT mix colors families anywhere on your page.

Challenge Rules:

• Excluding photo(s) (if you choose to use them), EVERYTHING on your page, including all paper, must be ONE color family (if you have to ask yourself if it has to match, the answer is YES!!!!)
• Your page must be newly created (you cannot recolor a page already in your TLP gallery)
• All papers, including your background, must match your chosen hue, you can use patterned papers as long as every color within the pattern follows your color scheme (NO WHITE OR BLACK)

Clarifications:

• If you use journaling, your font color must match your color scheme
• You can choose any color family except white, black or gray
• Only very subtle white or black accents on colored elements, text on word art, strokes on photos or strokes on text are ok as long as the one overall spirit of the challenge is maintained and the primary color of the items match your overall color family
• Photos are optional. If you choose to use photos, you can use as many as you like
• Photos do NOT have to be altered to match the color/hue scheme; any photo format is fine (full color, black & white, altered, blended, etc)
• Recoloring is permitted (and encouraged) on any aspect of your page, as long as it matches your chosen scheme
• There are no design requirements on page composition
• Templates are ok
• You can use any method you like to get all of the items on your page to be in the same color family
• If an element is multicolored, it must be converted to your chosen color scheme

Tips and tricks:
- Choose elements that match your chosen color/hue
- Recolor/adjust elements to match your chosen color/hue

Have an element you want to use, but it's the wrong color?
There are several ways to do this, but I'm going to share my favorite. I use PSCC, but there should be comparable methods with most programs. It's a simple way to change the color with just a couple key strokes.

Step 1:
Open your element and choose hue/saturation:
Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation OR Ctrl U (PC) CMD U (MAC)
*using a flower from Forever Joy's Birds of a Feather

Step 2:
Check the colorize box and adjust the hue and saturation sliders until you get your desired color. (Note: you can try lightness, but in my experience it doesn't create a natural look)

Step 3: OPTIONAL
Adjust lightness/darkness using Curves
Image > Adjustments > Curves OR Ctrl/CMD M
Pull the center of the line up to lighten or down to darken

Additional Tips:
- To reuse your last setting for either hue/saturation or curves, add shift to your keyboard shortcut. Example: Shift CMD/Ctrl U to reuse your desired colorization multiple times.
- For light colored elements, Image > Adjustment > Color Balance (CMD/Ctrl B) is a good alternative (use the sliders to adjust the color); you can even it do it more than once to make it more pronounced

You can use any (non white/black/gray) color family you like, but here are some examples of common monochromatic hues, where each wedge of the color wheel shows the spectrum of color tones, tints and shades within a hue.

Your page must be a new page in order to count for the Month of Challenges. Your page must be posted in three places:

1. Uploaded to the TLP Gallery (not an outside hosting site).
2. Posted in your page thread you created in the MOC Layouts Folder. You should have one post per completed challenge page. If you complete all 31 challenges, your thread should contain 31 posts. Please do not comment in the participants’ page threads so we can keep them clean.

Your page must contain Lilypad product (pages with photos and font only do not count). If you use product from other stores, your pages must contain at least 75% current Lilypad product (currently for sale in the store from either permanent designers or guest designers).

WHITE AND BLACK ARE ONLY PERMITTED AS SMALL ACCENTS ON COLORED ELEMENTS (NOT ON PAPERS)

If your element or paper is in the correct color family but has a bright white or a dark black, are those okay to use as is without recoloring? For example, a pink and white striped paper, or a pink flower with a black center.

A small accent on a colored flower like you described is fine, but your paper can't have white stripes, it has to be all one color hue.

@SeattleSheri I have a question - if I have a flair that is in my colour hue, but has a white star can I use that without re-colouring it? Or does it need to be in the hue? There are no other white items on my page Thanks.

As long as the flair is your chosen hue, it’s ok to have white or black accents

@SeattleSheri - just to be clear, do we have to recolor our page or can we just use elements and papers in one color family? Thanks for the fun challenge!

You can absolutely make a page just by choosing items of the same color family. The tutorial is only for those wanting use elements that don't match their color scheme.

Carol's red page that I have listed as the first sample is a good example of how a patterned background must be altered to meet the challenge requirements. Her polka dots and striped papers are all within the red hue (ranging from dark red to pink). Recoloring white is a challenge, so it easiest to choose a paper that doesn't have contrasting colors if you need to modify it.
