Loved trying this Rae! I painted all the edges of the square frame & painted one edge of my background paper.
Great challenge! This is one of those that when you do it . . . you say "why haven't I been doing this?!!" The left and right sides are layers of colored watercolor/acrylic style brush marks.

what a creative challenge!!! Thank you @bcgal00 for hosting this!! I painted edges of yellow&white paper and I also painted on the edge of the background paper and then clipped in a pattern paper for a softer look.
My attempt with my program at paint. The brush marks are actually real brushes from a kit(!), my portion is the dark brown around the edges. This is as good as it gets.
I would suggest a few things. 1) When tomorrow's SOSN sale goes up, see if there are any brushes. While they won't be free, they should be cheap. 2) Do a general search on the term "abr" in the folder you keep your scrapbook kits in. I bet you probably own some brushes already. 3) You can use the default PS brush of "soft round." That brush will definitely be in your options. I would select the color and increase the brush size to about 60 pixels. You can then go lightly over the edge of whatever you're wanting to "brush." I would also do as Rae suggested and create a new blank layer for your brushwork. It's much easier to correct any errors. 4) Do an Internet search on free Photoshop brushes. I know of several sites (sorry, we're not supposed to post outside links). Hope this helps! Feel free to tag me if you need more direction.
What a great challenge. I always forget this trick...will need to remember to use it more often. Thank you. I painted the edges of the mat paper as well as the background paper.
I had no idea that I could do this myself. Thanks for the fun challenge. Can't wait to play with this technique more in the future!
For PSCC users looking to get all the Legacy Free Brushes - they are there just hidden. I don't know know why Adobe keeps doing this. But this should help:
One of my favorite techniques. Always love painting around the edges of my layouts. This was done with 66 brush with 65 opacity and then the soft brush 21 with 85 opacity just around the very edge
This added so much to my page! I used it on my background paper and love it! Thanks for the fun challenge.
