Curiosities

He meticulously catalogs
his cabinet of curiosities.
Two hundred thirteen dolls,
assembled, disassembled.
Heads: china, porcelain, straw.
Dates, countries of origin,
manufacturers when known.

Arms, legs, torsos: wood,
china, cloth. Cotton, wool,
linen. Eyelids, when present:
fixed, or mobile. Opening
and closing over glass orbs:
blue, green, brown. Black
irises: flat, blank, infinite.

They return his stare without
interest or concern, concealing
secrets and undetermined fates.
