Description:
In late 2002 when I was 14 years old the decision was made that I would be the youngest patient in New Zealand to have a publically funded gastric bypass surgery. As I was a minor the decision was made by my mum with my best interests at heart at the time. While the surgery was deemed a success, it was a very tough road in the years following due to the public health system essentially dropping me off their case load once I had the surgeons post operation follow up. For a few years it seemed like the best thing for me to have happened but as time went on and I developed other health issues like iron deficiency anaemia and lactose intolerance which we weren’t told about or supported through. I guess you could say hindsight is 20/20 and if I could change things I would, I would have either waited till I was older to have the surgery and made a more informed decision or not gone down the surgery route at all. If I was going to have a gastric bypass I would have waited till I was out of high school for a start as having major surgery and time off while I was starting my senior high school period wasn’t the best idea, asked more questions and made sure there was adequate post-operative support not just from the doctors but from other health professionals. I really truly believe because it looked like I was coping and the weight was falling off initially that I was ok when in reality years later it hasn’t been all rosy. Truthfully the option I would have gone towards even now is looking at my weight gain/loss journey as a more hormonal one since I have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and treat it more naturally by supporting my hormones and getting adequate support for my diet and exercise. In 2023 and beyond the plan is to supplement traditional medical models of care with more natural methods as well as I believe that is the best way for me – it may take me longer to lose weight, get fitter but I am also treating the root cause of my weight at the same time.
