Description
TEXT: As a white American woman, I doubt I can appreciate the depth of meaning this tradition has in its original cultures. I feel a bit awkward even giving it a try. So I decided to come at it in my own, personal, unique way; not meaning to imply any profound spiritual or cultural resonance. I chose some creatures that amuse me. I found an old page that both amused and had meaning for me. And I chose two animals that I’ve encountered, personally or metaphorically, that seem to speak to and about me: the badger and the porcupine.
***********************

I found this on my hard drive while preparing a new page for an "animal" art journal prompt at The Lilypad. I still feel a resonance with the same animals, so they are included on my new page. And I still feel the same dissonance regarding "cultural appropriation". How am I to identify, and claim, the symbolism of certain animals in my own psychology, without violating the cultural traditions of other peoples?

love that you put this together too!
I don't have much time to explain right now, I know I still haven't answer to your message properly, promise will do, but I think there is not disrespect or cultural appropriation about making an art piece, expressing feeling, I see it more like a thing of honoring the culture... We have tribes and African religions in Brazil who feel honored if you feel represented or make a piece of art that follow feeling about spirit animals, plus other cultures apart from the USA that have4 the same approach.... I forgot to post a link to one of the sites I looked at when looking for the Muse theme....and it guides you as to how to find your spirit animal, I agree, as you said, is not to be taken lightly, the finding your animal takes meditation, self cognizance and spiritual integrity....I don;t mean any harm or offense, anyway, I will try to answer better soon :)
Thanks so much for this one too!!! love the way you put it together and the way you identify with these, love the cmpsotion based on the book, and those neon colors are fabulous here :)
