To be a ‘normal’ kid was an odd thing for me growing up. I was born with a facial disfigurement, had countless numbers of doctor’s appointments, tests, surgeries etc. I remember one specific hospitalization. It was just before I was about to turn six. Grandma and Grandad had planned to take me to Vanuatu on a holiday for what might have been my sixth birthday present, but I had to get through this hospitalization and surgery first. Surgery was a success and while I was in there, Grandma and Grandad made a point of decorating my room all about the upcoming holiday with pictures and a countdown, so much so even the nurses got in on the act at times. I was discharged from hospital and it was then the countdown to this big trip….the first overseas holiday I would remember (the trip to Canada just before I was two doesn’t count). Vanuatu was a fantastic time, I was treated like ‘royalty’ while I was there being one of the only blonde haired blue eyed girls in town. Even the women working at the motel laundry ‘adopted’ me during this trip. It was such a good memory as this was one of the last big things I did with my grandad before he died so it holds a very special place in my heart
What a beautiful story. I am happy that you got to spend this amazing holiday with both your grandparents, and that what must have been a trauma of a painful operation, has turned into a good memory for you instead. I love your page.
I love the story you shared! What a fantastic memory of how the hospital stay was made better with the trip excitement. And I love that it was so memorable to you! The combinations of patterns in your circles are gorgeous! Thanks for playing in the November Journaling Challenge!
