Journaling Reads:
Mom was a baker. Baking was something that she loved to do, and she excelled at it. Just like Grandma. It made sense that both my sister and I would grow up loving to cook and bake. My brother grew up being the one who did the testing. Being the youngest, I was the one who grew up getting to scrape out the mixing bowl!
At Christmas time, Mom baked home-made shortbread for us. Christmas became synonymous with drinking hot cocoa and eating shortbread. The first Christmas after Mom passed away, I tried to bake shortbread. It was an experiment that I tried once and never again. At Christmas, if I wanted to eat shortbread, I went out and bought it!
Earlier this year, I received the gift of Mom’s recipe box. Inside are so many of Mom’s handwritten recipes. As I held the box in my hands, I cried. So many memories, and such a large part of my childhood, all nestled in that box. The first recipe I saw when I opened the box was Mom’s shortbread recipe. It was a sign. This week I baked Mom’s shortbread. It turned out perfectly. Once again the tears fell... not from sadness, but because I know that Mom is still right here with me in my heart.
