I am about an hour away from owning a new laptop with Windows 8 on it - any tips or tricks I should know about. I am familiar with Windows and am using Windows 7 right now.

I have win8 and its the same as others. it took some getting used to in the beginning though...once you know your way around...its just the same...

hate it... hate it... but i got a high resolution screen, i hate everything is big, can't make a browser smaller then 3/4 screen. and its update alert, a big band across what you doing appears and scares heck out of ya. I hope you enjoy more then I do. ( windows key and x together brings up box to shut down, and other things, as there is no start menu).

Hihi, I will also be nervous to change to windows 8.
Since my laptop was doing strange not so long ago, it crossed my mind that, if I had to buy a new one, it would be Windows 8.
Or Imac (in my dreams...)

Windows 8 is way different. It is more like the tablets in that it runs apps and such, but it does still do a lot of the things 7 did. It just takes time. Be prepared to spend the first week getting used to it. Mine has a touch sensitive pad that does swiping and such, and even though I had a tablet it took ages to get used to. I ended up getting a wireless mouse for my creating because I could never get the pad to cooperate.

It was rough at first, but i LOVE it now!

Good luck!

I went MacBook partly to bypass windows8. I figured if I had to learn a new OS, I may as well make the leap to Mac

Are you happy with the change Lisa?

So far, very. Finder is a bit different from explorer, but overall, I'm really loving the change. I don't think I'm nearly as frustrated as I would be with win8. This is the first time I've looked at computers where I felt that the Mac compared favorably dollar wise to a PC (with comparable specs). I have to admit it was a bit scary to take that leap, but I ran into a coworker in the Apple Store and he said that is all they have in their house (for many years) and they "just work". It's only been a few weeks and it feels normal. Will be hard to go back to work on PC again after vacation.

I am very lucky in that I am not back to university until Jan 6th so have around a week and a half to figure things out before I do assignments and such

I am terrified to lose 7, my other laptop is Vista but that is only used to hook up to my tv so I can watch movies.

If you set it to go straight to desktop and you only use desktop apps, it's not very different from 7. I am usually in Photoshop or Chrome. Photoshop is desktop only and the tiled version of Chrome kept crashing so I got the desktop version and I never use the tiles.

I'm sorry you hate it.
I make my browser smaller all the time. Is there an error that pops up, or does it just not go smaller? Also, if you right click on the bottom left hand corner, you can get to the 'start' menu you might be used too.

I really like it. I went from xp to 8. There's a few articles out there that are getting around windows 8. I read one and it helped me jump right in.

I think if you're in the tiles, there isn't much resizing that can be done. Maybe that's what she means, and she just needs to get the desktop version.

I just viewed a bunch of youtube videos about the differences between 7 and 8 to get a feel for the change. I like the 8.1 update - it opens up on the desktop and I put control panel on my taskbar so I never go onto the apps page. It works very much like Windows 7 for me now. I'm on a Toshiba and the touch pad is a pain, so I went with a wireless mouse and that makes a great difference.

Diane-I came from a toshiba & hopefully yours is better than my previous 3 but as they get older (like year 2 onwards) they have all tended to over heat to the point of shutting down randomly - don't want to scare you but thought I would share to at least prewarn you, hopefully the newer ones are better though in that respect.

I did the 8.1 update as well and spent a few hours learning how to customize it. Before the customization, I didn't like it, but now it's fine.

Cath explained better in chat yesterday what is happening. The windows can resize, but the content of the windows does not. So if she resizes her browser, she can't see the whole webpage anymore. I'm not sure why that would happen, so if anyone thinks they might be able to help her, I thought I'd mention it. It's definitely not a normal Windows 8 thing!
