A couple days ago I was recording my receipts, and I think the store charged me for two cartons of juice when I only bought one. I'm 99.5% sure I only had one. This is about $3.

It's been eating at me ever since! I probably waste at least that much every week, but I kinda want that $3 back, or at least another carton of juice. I'm so timid, and since the receipt was already about a week old, and now a couple more days have past since I found the error ...

What would you do? I know my Mom would totally go back and get the money (probably even if the receipt was a month old). I just don't know if I can do it.

I'd let it go and not worry about it. For something like that, if I don't find the error within 24 hours, I just figure the blame is on me for not finding it sooner and eat it. It would be different if it were a defective product and I was returning or exchanging but when the only "proof" I have is me saying I only bought one of something... I just don't feel comfortable asking for a refund beyond 24 hours.

If you had found out and gone back right away, they probably would have been able to take care of it for you... but since so much time has past there's no real way to prove they made an error. You can always try, but if I don't catch something like that right away (and I hate it when that happens) I usually just let it go and watch more carefully next time I shop at that store. :D

If it bugs you, just go back and talk to customer service. I'm sure they wouldn't hesitate to give you the money back. I almost did the same thing last week. I bought a bag of baby carrots and when I got home I opened the bag to rinse them and put them in snack sized bags and they were all white and dried out. I ended up chucking the whole bag. Grrr...

Depending on the store, they'd probably give it to you, but I would totally feel weird about asking for it after so much time has passed. Like, if it took me so long to notice it, do I really need it anyway? My husband would totally go back though. I accidentally bought substraction flash cards for my daughter when I needed addition. They cost $1 and he has reminded me 3 times this week that I need to return them! Seriously?! lol

I'm a huge chicken. I don't complain about anything. I even have trouble returning stuff.

Last week we went to supper and I ordered prime rib. Ordered it medium b/c in restaurants I get a little nervous (I eat medium rare at home) and this sucker came to me rare. Like, more rare than medium rare. And I didn't send it back b/c I'm an idiot and a chicken.

I would let it go. I figure my time/energy to get it fixed would cost more than the $3.

If it was along the lines of $20+, I'd do something abt it. For $3, though, and with more than a few days gone by... nah.

So it sounds like none of you are really aggressive in the return/refund department. My mom is, and I always get a laugh out of it. One time she returned something to Costco on behalf of my sister .... they looked the item up in the computer from the tag and said it hadn't been in the store for 3 years!! But they still gave her a refund for it! Costco is pretty awesome about returns.

I'll just try to forget about the juice ... I think the main thing is that I'm always disappointed when I shop at this store, and it's not the first time there has been a mistake. I always leave that store unhappy, usually because they didn't have what I wanted to buy, or because the employees are weird, and their produce is awful. The only reason I shop there is that it is literally a 3 minute walk over, it's so convenient when you need something right away.

I too would let it go only b/c so much time has passed. If I had noticed it right away I would have walked over to the service counter and had it fixed without hesitation.
I'm the one in the grocery line that people dread to see. At times I have 100 coupons and 8 store ads (price matching). I have had to stand my ground over the interpretation of a sales ad at Walmart - even though their policy clearly states that you do not have to have the ad in hand. Pffft!! /rant

I would let it go if its been awhile. What I have a problem with is if I buy something then I get home and the item is expired or no good. We usually go about a hour or hour and half to grocery shop. That usually gets me upset. Like once I bought a biscuit can and when we opened it the dough was all goo-ey and yellow/brownish. The can had expired 2 years ago and they still had it on stock, i called the store and told them about it, and now i check all the expired dates on my refridge and frozen items.

this stuff irks me... as i find i get over/double charged for stuff all the time. i just can't watch the clerk like a hawk when i'm out with the kids. and since i live a good 30 min drive (one way) from the store and only shop every other week, i almost always end up eating it.

totally frustrating though...

I've shopped at the same store for over 15 years. I know they would believe me if I said I didn't get the second juice thing but I rarely go back over stuff like that either.

If it's somewhere you go a lot, I'd probably casually mention it the next time I was there. "Last time, I'm pretty sure you double charged me for this juice..."

Great to see you here Tiff :)

Well, you know am no timid, so not only I would go get my money, but every time I shop, after some bad experiences, I check the receipts BEFORE I leave the till.....
In a store Ikea like, here in London called Home Base, we were buying 4 shelves and some hooks.
We went only for that so I knew exactly how much I would spend.
The shelves in the aisles were reduced to (cant remember but lets say) £5 each.
The hooks were 20 pence each, so maximum £25, but the cashier tells me is £50 something....
I say no, the price is not that.
She argues with me like if she was the store owner.
I call the manager and take him to the aisle to see how the price was £5
It was an error of their part to put them in the wring place, but as ALL the shelves were there and the price was clearly £5 each, by consumer rights they can't charge you more than that....
So I only paid £5 per shelf.

In the supermarket, I claim even if it's pennies ...because is not what YOU/I are loosing...is about the fact that sometimes they stick a penny or two (or cents wherever you are) over the marked price, but say is on bread, or toilette paper....
How many people will be saying...oh well is only a few pennies...
In our local Morrisons (like Walmart, huge) the amount of customers per day is enormous...imagine the money the supermarket owner is "stealing" from all those people....

So yes, I would ask for the money...but being a week old I'm not sure how it works where you are...
They know us at our supermarket, so they would believe, but that depends on how much they know you.
What you need to do is watch it next time before you leave the store....

Hugggzz

I've never taken things back cause I'm lazy but I work in a big supermarket and you would be surprised at the things people bring back and we exchange/refund no problem so I'd say go and ask nicely say that you have only just been able to check it,what have you to lose

Reading what Cyn said about the overcharging. There was a big stink recently about an error at a Walmart around here that was charging $14 for a loaf of bread. :imok
Crazy right? It was a computer coding error and is now fixed but I am sure there are plenty of people that didn't noticed and just as many that don't care to go back b/c of the hassle of getting the error fixed.

If it had been the same day you noticed go back. I have before. But over a week. I'd say let it go. Lesson learned and just be sure to check your receipts.
