I have this book... Q&A a Day... that poses a question each day and you respond to that same question on the same date over five different years. So today's question is....

"What do you want to say when someone asks, 'What do you do?'"

I always think of snarky answers, but never give them. And sometimes it literally depends on the day and who is asking. :giggle

What about you? How do you describe your profession (or lack thereof)? Do you ever embellish, or downplay? Would you like to tell them something besides what you do?

LOL Kristina!!!!! @klee73010

These days it is either I say I'm retired because of disability, or I do Creative Team work for digital scrapbooking.....that id the person asking deserves my interest to then explain what digital scrapbooking is..... which I was about to post something about it as a matter of fact ...

there is the other alternative, which I used for the past 5 years or so: Mum to a teenager, but I can't say that anymore now she is 20!!!!!! :giggle

I'm a Jenn of All Trades. :giggle

My job is all over the place. It's a family business that has grown pretty big - we make stairs, rails, and then install rails. We handle many new home development on the East Coast for Toll Brothers, and in NJ/NY/PA/MA/DE in addition to Toll, we work with K. Hovnanian, Pulte, Lennar, and other bigger home builders/developers. I handle so many different things that I would bore you, but mostly for Toll - the gist is Invoicing, Contracts, Pricing, Collections, Insurance Certificates, Rail Orders, and other random things!

I used to be a Re-insurance Contract Administrator, a homeowners Claims Rep, Children's Play Place store manager and a Lifeguard! LOL!

I'm a stay-at-home Mom and Grandma. And I have been so blessed to be able to do that and not have to go out to work. I have done a few part time, seasonal or work from home jobs over the years, but they were done around my family for the most part. So it has been good.

I still say Medical Assistant even though I've been working a desk job for the last 16mo. I'd been an MA since 1999. I've kept up my certification & I still get pulled to do pre-ops in Ophthalmology. My official title is "Appointment Representative", but there's still an M.A. after my name & I have more responsibilities because of that. I think the latest they're calling me is "Ophthalmology lead". It would be so confusing to answer "I'm a medical assistant who currently makes appointments, does diabetic outreach on behalf of the chief, and pre-op instruction for cataract surgery." That's not even getting into being a student at San Francisco State, Chair of the city traffic committee, mom of two boys, and extended guest CT of Gina Miller. Hahaha! TMI.

For the last few years, as I wrote on my website, I say I'm a family photojournalist, scrapbook designer, and homeschooling mom. :)

In the 90's I was teacher. I never want to do that again (though I liked it at the time). The thing I wanted to do above all else in my life is be a mom. Loving that. :heartlub I might be a professional photographer someday. Or something else that I haven't figured out yet.

My answer is generally : Just about everything. What is it you want?

That's kinda a tongue in cheek reply though. Actually - this is what I do most days: - Senior IT Technical Program Manager | CSM | ACP-PMI | ITILv3 | SA - see why I try to keep it to myself....

You say CPA.... everybody wants to ask you tax questions

My husband's an RN. He is very happy and proud of that fact, but he hates all the "I have this going on, should I see a doctor?".

Me? It depends on the day. Some days I say I'm a CEO. After all, I'm co-CEO of my house :giggle Some days I say I work in the online memory keeping business. It usually depends on my mood and the person asking.
If they have already been snooty towards a SAHM, then I tend to say: I'm a Home Executive with an emphasis on Child Development. For some reason that sounds more impressive to those people. :crazy3

Personally, I consider myself blessed to be able to stay at home and help out other small businesses doing what I enjoy.

I say I'm a high school special education teacher, and then I usually get "you must have so much patience", followed by me saying "ummm no, I have none" lol. Recently it's been, "I'm a high school special education teacher with 3 years until retirement" :)

Right now, I'm an engineer (for the moment until my temporary detail is over). My permanent job is Fleet Manager. But I will just say engineer and be done with it. I get too many questions when I say Fleet Manager. No matter which job I have, I still manage a program.

Usually I just say that I'm a SAHM. As a SAHM it's usually other moms at school pickup who ask me "what do you do?" so I don't go into details cuz I'm afraid (1) it'll sound like I'm trying to compensate for "just staying home" and/or (2) it might make SAHMs without "work outlets" feel bummed about their lack of work. If it somehow comes up in later conversations, I'll mention the other stuff I do (eBay business, proofreading), but I don't like mentioning the business cuz I don't want people to think I'm going to try to sell stuff to them lol, and I don't like mentioning the proofreading cuz people tend to start speaking more formally to me after they find out. As if I'm going to correct them on their grammar!

Once the kids are both in school full-time, I want to find a job. I don't want a career, like DH has, but I do want a little part-time gig, where I only work when the kids are in school. DH wants me to work at Home Depot cuz of the discount. We tend to live there on the weekends. :)
