First, please know that I have no actual innate drawing or painting talent, so if I can do this, anyone can! I wanted to try watercolor painting but wasn't sure how to start. When I saw the beautiful flower sketches in NBK's artCrush #62, it occurred to me that I could use those as the outline for a painting. It made it so easy and I'm so happy with how this came out. The basic steps were: I made a little design by layering three flower sketches from artCrush #62 on a plain white background (in Photoshop). I printed that out on white cardstock (next time it might be fun to try watercolor paper but that felt too fancy for my first try). Then, I used an old watercolor kit of my daughter's and some old paintbrushes (origin unknown ) and added some rudimentary watercolor painting. I printed out "Happy Mothers Day" in strips and layered that on top to make it into a Mother's Day card. If you want to see the walkthrough, I made a video as I went along: Even if you have no painting talent of experience, this is totally fun and do-able!
@dawnmarch I am so impressed with your watercolor skills. Your card is wonderful! Such a clever idea to use the flower sketches as an outline. Thank you for sharing your creative process. I might need to give this a try.
Amazing project! Love those outlined flowers in Nicole’s latest artCrush and you took them to a new level! You will see a lift of this idea!
