Today is Global Day of Unplugging.

Just what is the Global Day of Unplugging? Well, it is no secret that we are increasingly connected to the world around us. Smartphones, tablets, WiFi access and the Internet have enabled us to be connected to the entire world 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every single day of the year
This offers endless possibilities and has of course widened many people’s horizons immensely by showing them what the world is like thousands of miles away. However, there are also times in our lives when we seem to forget just how necessary it is to step back from out digital devices and other gadgetry and actually perform the ancient art of speaking with people around us and observe the world that is all around us, and not just the pixels forming images of reality on the screen in front of us.
Not to mention how much we could help the environment by deciding to set our electrical equipment aside every now and then and just meet up with the people we’re endlessly e-chatting with for a coffee. The Global Day of Unplugging was created to do all of these things and more.

Do you unplug on a regular basis?

What do you do to unplug?

Do you unplug on a regular basis?
Nope. Only time I truly am unplugged is when technology doesn't work for whatever reason. I need to be much better at intentional unplugging as I waste so much time online that could be put towards other more important things.

What do you do to unplug?
Usually sleep!

When the children were smaller we used to turn off the internet during their 1/2 term, Christmas and Easter Holidays, and the first & last week of the summer holiday. That way we could focus on family. The children don't need our attention so much now. So I don't unplug as much.

We do still have 1 week a year when we go off grid though. We book a cottage in the countryside with no phone service and no internet etc. It's very good for us.

Do you unplug on a regular basis?
Yes once a week.

What do you do to unplug?
I turn off my phone and take off my smart watch and do family history work/service for 30 minutes.

Do you unplug on a regular basis? Sort of. I make it a point to move my rear end from the computer chair to the couch to watch TV in the evenings. The only time I actually "unplug" as in shut down my computer is if I'm going to be gone overnight (like with my 3 surgeries since October). I also didn't even get online while in the hospital even though I had my tablet with me.

What do you do to unplug? Sort of answered above. If I don't watch TV in the evenings, I will read. When my cousin was staying with me after my surgeries, I spent very little time on the computer. We talked... a lot! It has been a long time since just the 2 of us have been together and able to chat about anything and everything.

I sleep a lot... but I confess I usually have the tv on low in the background for white noise, so it isn't truly unplugging. I do unplug and prefer to do my reading in a physical book. There are times I end up using my phone or a kindle if I can't get the physical book, but I really don't like it as well. I love old-school books.

I am constantly trying to unplug but then also backsliding. It’s tough. About 4 years ago I took all social media off of my phone. I didn’t delete my accounts just limited my access. This has helped a lot.

There is an IG account I follow called the Offline Club where they plan events that are unplugged. They say they are reliving the 90’s hah! https://www.instagram.com/theoffline_club?igsh=cnF0emh3b21iMnRq

I don't feel like I'm plugged in too much, so I don't feel a need to unplug. I choose what notifications are allowed. I check my email and social media consciously, when the timing is right for me. I do lots of things like hiking and teaching that don't use computers. I love technology but I don't feel the negatives about it some people fret about. And when I see some people sitting together looking at their phones, I don't think "How sad, they're not interacting," I think they are currently not interacting but probably were 10 seconds ago or will in a minute. I'm so grateful the internet has made it possible for me to meet a lot of people I otherwise wouldn't and learn and virtually travel and learn how to cook fabulous vegan dishes easily and . . . so much!

I try my best not to do anything electronic until after lunch. I stay focused on my kids and homeschooling...as soon as I check that e-mail or see notifications...I'm distracted. I do not have notifications turned on on my phone either. That way I'm more controlled over when I respond to something. That phone is addicting and I find that if I stay off of it for a long period in the morning then it's easier to control it the rest of the day.

My kids only get 30 minutes of technology a day.

Do you unplug on a regular basis? I unplug all the time; I just get sick of dealing with it, to be honest. LOL!

What do you do to unplug? While unplugging, I like to read, go for walks with my dogs and get things done around the house.

I definitely don't unplug for a whole day very often if ever, unless we are camping. But even then I'm using my phone to take pictures sometimes. But I do go for walks with my walking buddy and leave the phone behind then for sure or when we go to the gym etc. So if I'm unplugged its for shorter parts of a day. Sometimes the constant distraction of notifications on my phone and/or watch drive me crazy at work, so I'll put them both away for a while so I can concentrate on the tasks at hand.

Do you unplug on a regular basis? Sort of ... if I go out to walk I leave my phone behind. And if I'm with friends I leave it in my purse. I was telling a friend this weekend that I can tell being "plugged in" has really decreased my attention span. In the evenings I plop down into a chair and bounce around online ... FB, Insta, message boards, email, favorite stores ... then I put my tablet down and pick up my Nook for a bit ... lather, rinse, repeat.

What do you do to unplug? I don't have a TV in my bedroom (never have), I leave my iPad in the living room. I do bring my phone into my bedroom, but only use it if I get a text ... which is rare and is usually my son who forgets he's three hours ahead and calls me at 1AM EST, lol!!! Frequently our calls texting with him saying "OMG Mom ... it's 2AM your time ... I'm so sorry." Thing is I really don't mind as I love hearing from him.

I do read on my Nook in bed, but it's a 13 y.o. E-ink model that can only go online to buy eBooks from B&N. As much as I love physical books, my Nook is so much easier to hold, esp. in bed.
