Agnes asked me to share my steps for my Trend Watch – Mist LO, so I thought I’d share here for everyone =)
Here is the photo that I wanted to use. I love that Claire is laughing and just looks so sweet….however, she’s at the edge of the frame, looking outward- oops.
So, from a design perspective, I knew I had to draw the eye back into the frame, so in my head, I imagined something sort of like this…some sort of triangle shaped mask pointing to the elements and journaling on the opposite edge.
To make the photo masks, I used the Gesso it! Overlays from Pink Reptile Designs. For illustration purposes, I made the background black so that you can see the gesso layers. First, I picked one of the overlays I liked and made it large enough to cover the whole LO. The point is that I am going to clip my photo to JUST the gesso layer…so in the example, I intend for the photo to ONLY show up where you see white.
I can tell already that I’d like to have more of the photo showing, so I picked another gesso overlay and repeated the process.
Next is the super easy peasy mask step that makes it all happen. Add your photo to the layer immediately above the gesso overlay, then go to layer->create clipping mask.
Repeat for each gesso layer you have (RED arrows)…Then I noticed that I still have some areas around her mouth and eyes that I would like for the photo to show through (GREEN arrows)…So, I made my own photo mask by making a new layer, using the brush to just brush white where I want to show through and then duplicating the photo and repeating the clipping process to my new layer.
Here is the final base with the gesso layers providing the misty mask.
And finally, the final image with my added elements.
