I don't fly anywhere very often, but I get to fly to Connecticut on Saturday for an art retreat ( :yippee ) Are there any traveling tips you guys have for me? I just know my suitcase is going to be overweight, so I'm not taking my shampoo/conditioner/soap stuff and will just use what they provide at the bed and breakfast. I'm also going to leave my hair dryer home. {gasp} My hair ought to be a crazy curly hot mess all week. :giggle

Any tricks for getting good seats on Southwest other than paying more money for early check in? Lol. Anything else I'm not thinking of?

I never worry about what seat they give me and I don't pay extra for a seat. I figure that even if I pay I may end up with a less than desirable person next to me LOL. I often call ahead to the place I am staying at to find out what amenities are available to me - ie they may have a hair dryer that you can use. Pack a refillable water bottle that you can fill after you get past the gate so you don't have to buy expensive bottled water. Bring a few snacks to eat for the same reason. Also download an audio book or a movie so that you are ready to entertain yourself in case the flight doesn't offer movies or maybe the screen/audio at your seat doesn't work. Ear plugs can work nicely if you bring a book to read. Have a great time. I would love to attend a retreat :)

I'm the same. My reason is slightly more unique as I usually get good seats because I have special (wheelchair) assistance at the airport & to the plane door - while technically I can walk, I can't often walk long distances plus I deal with bouts of fatigue so this helps me enjoy my time away.

For domestic travel, I also take snacks on board as the cheaper airline here which I use 99% of the time charges for everything (preferred seats, luggage, food, drink etc). I did this even before becoming gluten free to save money plus most of my flights are 90 mins or less. I once had a flight attendant commend me for my nice snack that I had bought from a grocery store on the way to the airport....was a hummus dip pottle with a cup of carrot sticks.

I hope you have a good flight and enjoy the retreat! I'm not a frequent flyer so sorry I don't have any tips. I second the bring a refillable water bottle and make sure it's spill proof; I totally spilled water from our souvenir cups on the flight home lol oops!

Think about what you want to do on the flight and prepare it if needed, like download audiobooks or videos or podcasts. I haven't flown since 2019 and I'm on my way to bed, so my brain is a bit fuzzy, but that's what popped into my mind. Dress comfy! Have a wonderful flight and great time!

Have fun on your trip! I've never flown Southwest, so I don't have any good tips. I didn't realize that we had airlines in the US that had weight limits on luggage (other than the typical oversized check bag limit of 50lbs). My advice is to not sweat it! It's only a few hours of your life, so even if it's not perfect, it's short-lived. When we traveled within europe, there were all kinds of weight limits, so I bought a cheap device that weighs your bag (and also got good about puting weighty items in my purse/backpack). I bed the B&B will have a hair dryer for you too.

There are laundry machines everywhere... and you can wear same outfit many times traveling and most likely no one will know because they don't know you. ... I take pieces I can mix and match. Shampoo bars have been my friend.

I book 6 months in advance for cheapest prices... weds and tues tend to be cheapest and I try to avoid Mondays which are business travel days and cost more.

Sign up.for points from airlines to earn free bags and points. If you travel one airline a lot maybe get their credit card

Always carry at least one outfit and underwear and your medications in your carry on incase your bags get lost.

I take a water bottle and fill it after security. Saves on drinks

Wlso.i pack small.snacks I get at dollar store ... airport food is expensive

I also request a wheel chair for short connections to take me to gate .. it beats running through airports and sometimes can get you through customs f aster ...

Small treats for gate agents and flight attendants really make their day such as a small thank you note or a bag of candies ... they work so hard with little breaks slmedays and it helps to be appreciated

Don't drink coffee or tea on airplane... the water it's.made with isn't.. well ...safely put the best quality...same with ice often

I have sooooo many tips working for airlines I could go in for hours

it sounds like a great getaway! i don't know southwest or any seat tricks or even how far connecticut would be, but everything i see and read about your TSA is super strict and specific (and before we were married and visited the US, DH and I were randomly selected on each internal flight for a special search; we felt so welcome and only wished we could be that lucky with the $ kind of lottery) but the weight limit thing is always weirdly lacking in US travel advice- i don't understand how they can be all 'if you can cram and carry 100kg in your certain sized bag, all good', surely if everyone packs an elephant, the plane wn't get off the ground. Anyway that's so not the case here - weight limits on carry-on are possibly the strictest thing here apart from liquids (i can't remember US specific liquid stuff b/c ounces don't compute mentally for me and i don't know if you plan to take paint with you but obviously that's a liquid) but we're used to weighing bags and keeping a buffer because the scales aren't always calibrated great (there was a NZ airport article by a journalist recently comparing the same bag at various 'check your bag weight here' points in one of their airports, and then the extra one at the gate that is the point at which they'd tell you 'nope it's too heavy, that has to get checked, pay for a checked bag now', (which is around $AUD70) and none of the scales measured the bag the same but what they say at the gate is just how it is sadly. Our next booked flights are 5kg in one carry-on bag only, no personal item so it's really limiting but ok back on track ....

like everyone said a refillable water bottle is a must - i would add to that one with some kind of handle you can carabiner to your bag ideally so it doesn't fall out of a pocket, or so it takes up less space if you don't have a specific waterbottle pocket on your bag (hope that makes sense). I love my camera bag but it doesn't have a dedicated waterbottle pocket, but carabiners clipped to the side come in handy to attach like your jacket to as well (through the hangy loop most jackets have around the neckline) if you take it off at the airport or on the plane, it stays with your bag, no risk of falling off if you just placed it over it while you check your phone or under the seat etc.
Wearing layers including a scarf that can almost double as a blanket is the only other thing because it always feels super cold to me with the plane aircon but i imagine it's Fall there so you're already dressing in layers. That also means if you have a jacket with decent pockets, if you need to take some of the weight out of your luggage, you can potentially 'wear it' while boarding by putting them in your pockets, depending on the item.

Happy creating!

Thanks for the great tips. Yeah, I kinda agree with you. I don't really care where I sit on the plane too much, I just want to get there! :) Snacks is I great idea! And yes, I need to get my kindle books downloaded before it goes in airplane mode! I always forget to do that! I am very excited about this art retreat. I've never done one before, so I have no idea what to expect, but art all day for five days? What could be better?

Yeah, the water bottle is a great idea too! Spill proof... fabulous idea! :D

I am going with my IRL scrappy friend, so if we get seats next to each other, we're probably going to talk the whole time. Lol. Otherwise I will most like either read (get my kindle book downloaded prior to leaving) or I might hunt for good hiking trails near our B&B. We are going a day early to do a little hiking. :agree

For weight limits, I'm talking about the 50lb limit. I am a notorious over-packer and have been know to take way too big of a bag, then since there's room, I just keep throwing stuff in there. :giggle It's ridiculous, I know. Lol. ETA: I did check and they do have a hairdyer for us to use thankfully. It probably won't have my fancy diffusers but I can "rough it" Lol.

Wow! You are a wealth of good tips! Thank you!

The flight is only 2 hours, so that'll be nice! I'm not allowed to take a real suitcase on the plane for a carryon as that is like $60USD extra which is ridiculous. They charge for every little thing these days. I did book my flight just before they started charging for a checked bag too, so at least I get that one bag checked for free. I'm taking a backpack on the plane with all my art supplies and journals because I don't want them to lose my goodies. :giggle That's gonna count as my personal item (purse will be jammed inside too). I think my backpack does have the side pocket for a water bottle too, so that'll be handy!

Bart is raring to go away!

For me, I pack with a carryon for a 10 day trip overseas :) I gave up bringing a ton of stuff with me... I bring a trial size hairspray and gel and mousse but otherwise, soap, shampoo and hairdryer I use what is there. When I visit my friend or my brother I travel the same way... as little as possible and don't bring a bunch of shoes.. if you are not going anywhere fancy, walking shoes are all you need! Bring a cheapo $1 flip flops with you so you have "slippers" for the hotel room and can even wear in the shower if needed. Just have fun!

Oh and roll all your clothes that you put in your bag...everything... it gives you more space... bring some ziplocks with you for dirty clothes.. put the dirty clothes in and then lean on it to get all the air out as you seal it.. I use a smaller size for the underwear, and then the ziplock 2 gallon bag for the shirts and pants... I only bring a few pairs of pants/jeans but a shirt for every day.... you would be amazed how you can compact re dirty clothes and how much room you save in that!

I haven't flown in over a decade but my best advice is twofold: know the TSA/airline rules and then be extra nice to everyone you meet.

I brought knitting with me on the plane and knew the best practices to keep both TSA and flight attendants from panicking: bamboo circular needle with clearly established project on it, silicon point protectors, and no scissors. One of the flight attendants kept coming over to watch my project grow and ask questions; I think I may have inspired her to knit too.

Weirdly, I've had a flight attendant tell me I can't use my digital SLR during takeoff because it "might mess with the airplane's electronics." Nope, lady, but I'll switch to a film camera. Zero electronics in my Holga.

I used to fly with film quite a bit and had the TSA rules pulled up for hand-checking before I went through security.
