Am finally sick of replacing my phone and need a tablet for uni so next week I'll be jumping ship from andriod to apple. I'm considering the iphone 5s & ipad mini 2.I've only used apple products a couple of times so I'm nervous & its an expensive change for me so does anyone have any tips or must have apps (particularly a good office type app, pdf reader app for uni)

We slowly made the switch beginning with iPhones several years ago now. We are now all Apple. We both have iPhones, husband has an iPad, and we have and iMac and MacBook Pro. It took us a few months to get used to the Apple system, but now we love them and don't see ourselves ever going back to PC's! I love that they are fast for photo editing and scrapbooking! As for apps I really like Afterlight and VSCO for photo editing. They are really the only ones I use for that. We don't read on them however. We use our Kindles for that.

iOS comes with office apps already - Numbers and Pages are similar to MS Office's Excel and Word. If they are not already installed on your new devices when you get them, they will be a free download from the app store.

For PDF reading, you can use the installed iBooks application, but I've found getting content into it and then organizing to be a little clunky. DropBox is free and will let you read your PDFs stored in the cloud. Two paid apps that I like that allow both cloud and local (on the device) access to many document types including PDF are Goodreader and Documents by Readdle. Both will work with DropBox and iCloud.

Jennifer, remember to give yourself time to get used to the nuances of Apple products versus Windows or what you've been using. It might get frustrating, but give a holler, and someone will try to help! Make a note of questions, and you can also ask at the store. Yay for Apple! :)

^^this^^Perhaps there will be a class for newbies at the store? I know they're so great about answering questions, though, so you should be good to go right from the start. :)

Unfortunately there are no Apple stores around so will be learning on my own. I'll have a couple of weeks before I'm back at uni to get used to them. Primary reason for the ipad is i dont want to take my laptop down to school but need something I can use in lectures etc for notetaking

You will love your phone for photos and the editing apps you can get! I have Afterlight, Lightbox, PicTapGo, and BeFunky.
Just take your time. Play and have fun. We learned a lot from watching U-tube videos.

I can remember years ago buying a macbook and tried learning it for about a week (I had never even touched a mac before that). Even had one of my husband's students come and try to help me love that thing but I HATED it and ended up taking it back. Fast forward a few years and I bought an iPad when they first debuted (still have that thing), then we bought more iPads (I think we have 8 now LOL), then I moved up to iPhones, and then I had to replace my computer and as I was browsing through the store I came across the iMac and fell in love with that machine. I was not even looking for a mac due to my previous experience. All of that to say this, I think having the iPads and iPhones helped me so much because it was just a seamless flow for me after already using the apple operating system and now apple is about all we have in our house. It only took me a couple hours to figure out my new computer when I brought it home because everything was so intuitive and because I was already used to how apple works. Having the iPads and iPhones was huge in my learning curve. My husband is a college professor and he uses pages and a power point app all the time in his teaching. It's been a big help to him. I only use my stuff for fun so I just run photo apps on mine, and games!! Good luck. You can always call Apple support with questions. I had to use them once and they went above and beyond what they had to do to help me and got everything worked out. So helpful.

I have the Iphone 5c and love it, its my first Iphone too and I bought it because of all the apps you have access to.

It definitely takes time to get used to switching from Android to Apple, but once you start getting the hang of it... you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner! You will love Apple! :yup

I used PCs for two decades before I switched to an iMac in 2011 and it was an easy switch. A few things required learning a new way to do it, like the way I dragged files around to organize my digi-stash, but it was easy to figure out or google to find the answer.

My husband is a graphic designer so is Mac heavy with his technology but we've had iPhones since the beginning. I actually just did the opposite over the summer and chunked my iPhone for a Note 5 which I LOVE!!! Good luck in your journey!

I dont have a smart phone but I switched computers to Apple in 2008...and love it.

Sarita has an iPhone (I think is 5S?) and we have a mini iPad that we love!!!!
I think you will fall in love!!!!

If you go for the iPad be sure the mini is big enough for you to do your work on and SEE it. The regular size fits a lot of keyboards and I have a physicist friend who used it for work. Microsoft Office for Mac is free so you can use that old familiar (and sometimes a royal pain) bit of software.

I have an artis friend who is getting a tutorial from me when she gets home from vacation on how to use Office on her iPad. It will be a challenging session as she doesn't trust her instinct re software. However she mastered the regular use of the iPad on her own with only the occasional help from her granddaughters. I LOVE LOVE LOVE all my Apple toys.

eta: There is a new 4" iPhone coming out ...this week? If you like the smaller size, it might be for you.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I've been spending this evening setting them up. My phone is pretty much done as far as what apps I want and I'm slowly figuring out what apps I want to have for my iPad since it's mostly for school. I have a case for my phone and I know what iPad case I want and where I need to go to get it, I just ran out of time today to get it
