So, I had to renew my Driver's License this week and it's been 10 years. Well, things have definitely changed in my state of GA!

I had to provide my birth certificate and marriage license to prove my name. (Passport is currently with the Gov't trying to obtain a VISA for China). I had to provide documentation of my SS# (tax return) and two proofs of GA residence. New photo. New fee. And boom... I can continue to do what I have been doing in this state for the past 33 years... drive.

It was wild! And this was on top of having to renew my passport this year and apply for the above mentioned VISA so we can visit our son in China.

AND for the 1st time in over 20 years, I had to jump through major hoops to prove US citizenship for my medical license renewal.

I feel so engrained in the matrix of the gov't that I couldn't get off the grid if I tried! EVER! LOL.

Does anyone else have to share every detail of their life to continue doing things they have been doing all along? It's getting a bit crazy!

Side note: Who loved these movies? Am I right?

Whoa, that's a LOT of documentation! How much paperwork did you need for your VISA? Cuz it was probably a similar amount as the Driver's License! Yeesh. I haaaaaaaaate giving out my social security number, and I believe NO website/computer system is completely secure. (Don't get me started on electronic patient files.) I didn't take my DH's last name, so would I have to bring my marriage certificate with me? That seems kind of...sexist. And I hate the patriarchal/sexist term "maiden name" instead of "birth name," but I digress.

Having gone down that rabbit hole lol, I was just telling @tkradtke Tracie about how my local library required two forms of identification when I told them I'd moved. My state Diver's License with my new address wasn't enough to prove I still live in the area serviced by the state funded library. So weird. It's like the library doesn't trust the DMV to do their job. And who carries a utility bill with them? My car is in DH's name, and as stated I didn't change my name, so I wasn't sure if the title would even work.

Hm, I always thought the Germans are the masters of red tape, but obviously not. We don't have to renew our driver's license at all. But then again, in the country of speeding and expensive cars they encourage driving by all means - even if you are not fit to (just kidding - a bit).

Other than that, yes. More often than not you wonder if you pay the state to work for you or whether you work for the state.

Whoa! That's crazy!! I renewed mine a couple of years ago and didn't have to do much except show up and have a couple of forms of ID, but I knew in advance because like Sara said, who carries their utility bill with them. Well, come to think of it, I do hoard mail in the car sometimes so it's completely likely I have a bill in there somewhere lol. But yeah, I don't know how anyone could live off the grid!

I wonder if it has anything to do with the change in state driver's licenses to be compliant with the federal ID requirements (I can't remember what it's called exactly). Like, here in Arizona, our driver's licenses will no longer be valid for airline travel in a couple years unless they get specifically renewed as a compliant ID/license. I'm thinking it would take more of that other documentation to prove you are who you are.

Yep. Malta is a country that makes you go through the Id hoops at every turn.

I suspect something like this. The reason I had to do so much for my driver's license was b/c it wasn't "secure ID compliant" (a gold star on the front). This is obviously new since my last renewal and it seems very "federal gov't-esque". Now that I'm "secure", I won't have to jump through so many hoops in the future AND the airline thing makes total sense. (well, still overkill, but logical for gov't standards)

The reason for the marriage license was because of the name change. Because my current name is different from my birth name. I get that, but I've been married for 24 years (and driving the whole time). Geez.

Re: the statements, I did my research online before going so knew to bring everything. Thank goodness.

All this to say... it was intense, but I it's over. I just hope all of this red tape everywhere actually helps catch bad guys :)

well, not sure if you are much on Facebook these days, Jenn, I did a post about something like that, and some of you here know about my saga with the government making me prove how disabled I am.....
It didn't get to that much here in the UK, but then again, we are the country with more surveillance cameras in the world, so probably they already know everything......
The Matrix with an added "Person of Interest" (the TV show) machine!!!!!

I have recently heard horror stories by parents of adopted children when trying to get them a driver's license for the first time. The USA citizenship laws for international adoption changed and it was several years before the documentation process caught up. We adopted in the midst of that transition and our daughter, as well as others are now turning 16. Technically, my daughter became an USA citizen as soon as we touched American soil, but we had to pay $400+ about 12 years ago to get the document to prove her new citizenship. Some parents did not, and now they can not get a driver's license for their teen until they get their Certificate of Citizenship. The current price to acquire the document is $775 with a several months wait.

I wondered if your marriage license itself showed your NEW name, of if it showed your birth name. (Since I didn't take my DH's last name, IDK how that works lol.) So I wondered why the DMV wouldn't want your social security paperwork to prove the change of name. It just seems interesting to me. Cuz on the flip side of this coin, what does a divorced woman show if she changed her name BACK? Would she have to show her divorce decree??? Wouldn't you need the "name change" paperwork from whatever gov't office handles that?

I guess my very long point lol, is that it seems like a lot of extra steps/work for Georgia drivers, esp. women drivers.

Dang!! I had to get a new DL photo a few years ago I don't recall having to have anything other than myself, my current DL and that's it! My new license expires in 2044, but I think every so often you have to get the photo updated. I already don't look like my photo...hair is longer, isn't bleach blonde and my face isn't as chubby LOL

And this post reminded me that we needed to renew the car tags! Thank you!

Yes, the new IDs are why you had to do that.

Indiana did that several years ago... and on the flip side of it, because I had a federally compliant ID, I was able to order a new Social Security card online to be sent directly to my house without paying any fees or going into an office to show any ID. So there is a silver lining here! :)

We got caught trying to open a bank account for our son. Two forms of ID, please. Um, he's a baby. He has a birth certificate. There is no other form of ID for a two month old. It was a bit easier once we got a Medicare card and a passport, admittedly.

Well, with our adoptions I feel like we have turned over every part of our lives to the government. I have no secrets!

But I did just recently have to take my daughter to get her learner's permit & there was SO MUCH documentation they needed it was ridiculous! She had a passport & still need her social & proof of address.
