In case you didn't read the title....

This is a food chat!

So, turns out my mother in law is coming for Thanksgiving dinner next Saturday.

We'll have turkey, spatchcocked if Nick has time. Then on the smoker.
Potatoes I'm sure. Although, maybe I'll skip the white and go for sweet? But I do like gravy on leftover sandwiches the next day....
Pie. Probably pumpkin.
And then...Hmmm....Undecided.

So... What are you making?

We're doing the full deal- smoked turkey, mashed potatoes & gravy, stuffing (I make the homemade oven variety- no boxed mixes here!), green beans (no casserole yuck!), homemade cranberry sauce & of course pie (apple & pumpkin with homemade spiced whipped cream!)

It's just us & our hockey billet and I think we'll invite hubby's grandma in case she has no where to go. I've also put out the invite to any of Noah's teammates that dont have thanksgiving to come over... not sure if I'll regret that one or not! Eek!

We're all going over to the east coast to my oldest DD's house this year. They've always come to our house in the past, but they want to have it this year. We're having ham instead of turkey. We're having mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, not sure what else. I have to have pumpkin pie, but the others aren't big on it. We'll have apple pie, too. My husband has done the majority of the cooking in the past and our youngest DD cooked for all of us (at our house) last year. I'm really getting hungry after just reading two posts. Haha

I actually haven't even thought about it yet. I don't know why Thanksgiving seems to have snuck up on me. :giggle My mom just texted me last night to ask what she should bring and I didn't even know what to tell her yet. Lol. I'm having a friend come to stay this weekend at my house so we can scrapbook all weekend, so I told my Mom that I will start planning the meals and stuff on Monday.

I host both sides of the family. My MIL always does the turkey because she wants it to be fresh, not frozen. I do all the rest and usually make things like almond green beans (healthy version of green bean casserole), corn, mashed potatoes, rolls of some kind and of course gravy. My Mom usually bring a veggie tray or a fruit tray and then we have WAY to many snacks too... like nuts, ritz crackers and cheese, olives, etc. And THEN we have to have apple AND pumpkin pie. It's insane the amount of food we have for one meal!

Then my sister and her family come on Friday and we have another day-of-eating on Saturday when my parents come over again. I usually make lasagna or enchiladas for that day because I'm still full from Thanksgiving day. :giggle

I have to have "brown and serve" rolls. I like dipping them in gravy. Now that I'm allergic to red meat, Thanksgiving is an easier holiday than most because "bird" is the expected main course lol, which is a relief for me. ETA: oh, meant to say I love mashed potatoes. Even DH's family knows to put them right in front of my place setting so I get them first lol!

spatchcocked

So, am I the only one who never heard of this before? LOL I had to look it up. Chef, I'm not.

As for Thanksgiving this year, it's our year to be with Jay's family and I know we'll have turkey and ham, dressing and then beyond that, I just don't know as his aunt is hosting and I'm not sure what all she will make.

On Wednesday, even though I won't be with my mom on Thanksgiving, we'll have Pie Day, where we make pumpkin, pecan, and apple pies. We might make another type of dessert as well. I'll be making those to take to Jay's aunt's house. On Saturday after Thanksgiving, we're going to my mom's to help her put up her Christmas decorations and she's going to do a ham that day I think.

My sister is hosting so she is making the turkey. I don't know what else. My mom always makes her famous mashed potatoes. She will probably make the stuffing, too. I am making either my mom's broccoli-cheese casserole or green bean casserole. My aunt will bring corn casserole or shrimp salad.

We'll also have rolls, apple pie and pumpkin pie, and potentially cranberry sauce.

This is a Nick thing. I am not going through that. But, he read? heard? about it one year, and decided to go for it. Well, I loved it and told him he needs to keep doing it! It was so moist - that may have been the brine though.

You might! Do you have an extra turkey...just in case? :giggle

I like dipping rolls in gravy. But that's one thing I'm picky about. For Thanksgiving, I make rolls. I'm heading over to a friends on Thursday, so I'll make rolls twice next week.

I'm currently making a list. Just decided last night that we are going to do Thanksgiving here on Wednesday since the kids all have other places to go on Thanksgiving Day - spouses family, their dad's house, etc. Works for me because I get it over with on Wed and then relax with leftovers the rest of the week :giggle. We are currently deciding if we want to deep fry the turkey. I guess we'll have mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, green bean casserole, and maybe a broccoli casserole. Not sure what else. I'll be doing most everything myself since they will all be working that day, so I'm not going overboard. DIL is bringing pumpkin pie. DD will be lucky to get her with her kids :giggle.

We always go over to my parents. We'll have all the traditional food. Turkey, stuffing, potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, etc... I'm in charge of green bean casserole since my kids love it. So...I just have to make one thing! Woohoo!

We're home just us 4 this year, no going to in-laws or my family so we're cooking.
Or rather hubby is cooking all the main dishes...and I'm just helping. :clappy

Since there's just us 4 he's doing a small chicken (hen) plus mac&cheese, greens with smoked turkey meat, homemade stuffing, rolls, candied yams, deviled eggs and shrimp dip --- the last 3 in this list are my duty!:cheer

I did not know this! I'm sorry - that sounds difficult.
It's a new allergy for me. (Allergies can occur at any point in life. I'm now allergic to a protein in red meat. It's a non-iGe mediated allergy. (IOW, different than a typical food allergy).

Anyway, as for gravy and rolls: DH makes rolls, too, but I want the brown and serve so he buys them for me. He treats me right! :)

We go to my mom's house. There will be about 15 of us. My mom does the cooking. Turkey, mashed potatoes, homemade stuffing, cranberry sauce, green bean caserole and some carrot dish. Unfortunately, this year the only thing that I can really eat is the turkey. To many carbs in the other stuff. I'm not sure what I will do. I might have to take my own food. My step dad makes all the pie, which I should not have but I cannot pass up a small piece of apple.

This sounds almost exactly like my menu -except the smoking the turkey part (which I would love but don't know how to do). I only need a small amt of turkey so I opted for the turkey breast instead of a whole turkey. We've been staying home and just keeping it to the immediate family the last few years for Thanksgiving ... and we're all dieting - but having Thanksgiving food is a must so I'll just make small portions to begin with. We'll get a taste of Thanksgiving without the guilt for days and days! So I'll probably just get store bought pies - tiny ones instead of full size, so we get just a taste of dessert too. I don't love baking!

The turkey is about all I should be eating too! You sound like you have way more will power than I will have! Kudos to you!

No will power...lol. I had gastric bypass surgery in August so if I eat a lot of high carb stuff I will spend the rest of the day miserable. The surgery is a great tool!
