Last week, we found out that my husband is going to have back surgery next month. He has been in pain for a while due to three severely herniated discs and all non-surgical healing methods have failed to help. The surgery is actually outpatient (which blows my mind) and should take just over an hour. However, he will be on disability and out of work for at least six weeks.

He has had surgeries before- two related to a crushed collarbone and a collapsed lung (it had to be reinflated). I had never experienced any surgeries until I had to have a c-section when delivering my daughter 10 years ago. Since then, I have also had surgery to remove my gall bladder.

Needless to say, surgery is on my brain right now and I am curious- have you had any surgeries before?

Yes, I have. I was 17 and my appendix ruptured while on my Grad Night trip to Disneyland. That was....a memorable trip. I came all the way home on the bus and my mom was out of town. My oldest brother picked me up and took me to my grandparents house (we didn't know what was wrong at this point). I was in the fetal position on their floor so they took me to the hospital. Longest.ride.of.my.life. Seriously, they chose the furthest hospital from their house. LOL! I had surgery that night and spent a week in the hospital. Almost missed graduation.

That pain is way worse than any labor pains. Way worse. I can't even describe it.

Too many to count.....first surgery was when I was 9 weeks old

At 14 I was in a car accident and broke my neck (C2 in half)... I had to have surgery to repair it. They took bone from my hip and wired it all together to fuse it. I was in the hospital for 32 days, but that wasn't due to the surgery, it had more to do with spinal cord healing.

Surgery is on my mind right now too as my daughter found out on Tuesday that she has to have surgery on her foot (entrapped nerve). She's on the schedule for October 19th.

Oh my gosh! You poor thing! I can't even imagine the pain.... my daughter was so miserable with her appendicitis and hers was nowhere near rupturing. And on Grad Night too!

I'm so sorry your husband has to endure another surgery! I hope his recovery is swift and takes care of the pain he's been suffering!

I've had many surgeries … as I'm thinking back, I think the count is 7 or 8. Complete hysterectomy, gall bladder, shattered wrist and arm (2 surgeries to put that thing back together properly) to name a few. I do not come out of surgery very easily - I recall after the hysterectomy procedure, being in a fog for days. Even the gall bladder surgery, being day surgery, I was there all day and into the evening.

Knock on wood - no, nothing more major than removal of one wisdom tooth.

My only surgeries have been dental. I had extensive orthodontic work as a child and teen (braces twice) which included extractions of 12 teeth, 4 of which were adult molars. Then, of course, I had my wisdom teeth removed when I was 19.

I'm also knocking on wood. Surgery scares me. The possibility of c-section was the only thing that scared me about being pregnant. (I ended up having 3 natural births, the third one at home.)

Good luck to your husband!

Nope. I've been very lucky health-wise. I can count on two hands the number of times I've ever even been sick enough to require medication.

I would have probably welcomed a c-section after both epidurals failed & I had to endure all-natural childbirth with my daughter. :P

Tonsils as a 5 year old. All I remember is my cousin and another child (family friend) got ice cream after the surgery and I didn't. All 3 of us had them out the same day and were in the same room.

No more major surgeries until I was in my 40's. Gallbladder in 1999 and rotator cuff in 2003.

As far as dental... wisdom teeth in my teens and several different teeth extractions in the 90's and early 00's. The 22nd of August I had 8 teeth removed and will have the remaining 8 teeth removed in October. When you have teeth that break off while eating scrambled eggs, you know they are in bad shape. Heck, I had cavities in my baby teeth. So I am going to get full dentures. I took naps every day for a week after this and I never take naps. I am just now starting to feel like I have energy to do things. So I expect the same in October.

a lot, about 20 were related to a motorbike crash I had 15 years ago. Other than those, I had my gall bladder removed last year, and 1 dental surgery, one of my wisdom tooth got removed.

I had a tonsillectomy when I was a kid, and a hysterectomy a lot of years ago. Those are the only 2 real surgeries I've had.

Hope all goes well for your hubby and that his recovery goes well also!!
I had 3 of my wisdom teeth out as a teen and I had a tubal ligation after my youngest was born. They wheeled me straight from the delivery room while I was still numb from the epidural. That's the extent of my surgical history.

A few, not many.

1- to remove a fatty mass from right under one of my breasts. I looked like I had 3 boobies!
2- to fix a hernia.
3- to remove a benign mass that covered 98% of my uterus.

Wisdom teeth removed, gum surgery x2 (one to remove extra bone and the other to lengthen a crown), 1 pulled tooth
Lasik on both eyes to correct vision, laser on an eye for possible detached retina (it hurt like heck so does that count?)
Baby 1 via C-section (hated it!!), so baby 2 was a VBAC, and baby 3 was adopted
Removal of benign mass in my uterus

I had neck surgery about 7 years ago. same thing - they sent me home same day, which was really surprising. It also put me in the wrong mindset for recovery, which I expected to be similarly quick and it was NOT. so good thing you guys are prepared. I jokingly told everyone "it feels like I've been stabbed in the neck" ;)

I had an emergency c-section with my first 14 years ago, a scheduled c-section with my second. And laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis twice.

I was really healthy as a child, only had my wisdom teeth out at 19. Then, at 35 arthritis and degenerative disc disease struck and I've had SO many surgeries and procedures since then! Most have been outpatient procedures- 11 cortisone epidurals in my lumbar and cervical spine. I count those as surgeries as I had to be NPO for hours, go to the surgical center or hospital, have an iv and be wheeled into the OR, and be put into "twilight sleep" so I didn't move while they were injecting medicine near my spinal cord. I had "oral surgery" 3 years ago to remove/biopsy a spot inside my mouth (turned out to be a freckle!)

For general surgery, where I was actually intubated and fully under anesthsia, I had half my thyroid removed(2011), a uterine ablation(2014) and last year(2017) I had an artificial disc replacement in my cervical spine. The uterine ablation I went home the same day, but the thyroid and ADR surgeries I had to stay one night.

The longest I ever stayed in the hospital was for the birth of my oldest- I was induced on a Monday morning with him, he was born Tuesday night and then we went home from the hospital on Friday. Both my girls were born on Friday nights- and with one we went home Saturday, and the other we went home on Sunday.

Oh, I'm so sorry @GlazeFamily3 - back pain is the worst!

I had wisdom teeth removed at 15.

At 21, I had a lumbar laminectomy for a herniated disc at L4-5.

At 34, I had a c-section.

At 38, I had a uterine ablation.

For quite a few years in my 40s I had injections and neurotomies for pain management.

At 47 (last year), I had a spinal cord stimulator implanted for pain management. I've lost 25 pounds, but need to lose quite a bit more before I can have back surgery for my herniated discs. I also have bulges, athritis, and severe degenerative disc disease. I could go ahead and have surgery, but the likelihood of needing additional surgeries after my first fusion is highly likely at my current weight . . . so we're trying this to avoid a long cycle of surgeries.

Best of luck to your husband. My recommendation is that he knows that he is in recovery even if he's doing outpatient with release to home. He cannot do ANYTHING that is not allowed. He needs to allow his body to heal.

I've had lumps removed from one of my breasts in my early 20s. They were discovered days before I started a new job in a new town, it was awkward timing, but fortunately my new employer was sympathetic.

Hope your hubby’s surgery goes without a hitch and he recovers quickly. Nothing worse than spinal injuries, its so debilitating.

I’ve had a C-section, 4 wisdom teeth removed, micro surgery on my index finger (I managed to ringbark that blerkkkk)... and yesterday I had biopsies on my breast but not sure if you’d count them as surgeries.
