Someone took away our summer (La Nina) and just gave us a lot of rain (still infinitely better than bushfires) so we've been using Netflix more. I prefer subtitles on when we watch stuff, even if they lag behind (birds can be loud and it's easier to read the text than rewind when missing parts of conversations) but they especially bug DH when we're watching something made for Netflix filmed in a different language, because their English dubbing and voiceovering word choice is at times very different to the words used in the English subtitles down the bottom. Does this drive anyone else crazy and do you watch tv with subtitles on or off usually?

We rarely watch movies with subtitles. My husband does not like watching foreign speaking movies as he cannot keep up with the subtitles.
Some years ago we watched a Japanese movie of people trapped in a tunnel and it was one of the best foreign speaking films I have ever seen - it kept my interest all the way through.

We are absolutely a subtitles on family! My hubby has hearing loss from his time in the Army in tanks, so he wears hearing aids and has for about a year now. I have no issues with hearing, but sometimes the volume goes up and down so much with either whispering or low toned talking or accents, etc., it's just easier to have the subtitles on. They do drive me crazy sometimes, especially if the text is over explanatory text in the show (like identifying a person or something).

Brody & I always watch with subtitles, I think it's actually how he taught himself to read when he was 2. I don't hear well with a lot of noise going on, so I read the tv. Jamie does not like them, but will tolerate them if we're having a family movie night.

Never used them although I should with my hearing issues. But then I probably couldn't read them either with the vision issues I sometimes have!

For the most part even though the TV is on, I'm not even watching it. It's just background noise for me so I don't hear the pounding in my head from my tinnitus.

I suffer with tinnitus also.... not good when I go to bed at night as it is louder then.

With my hearing loss, subtitles or closed captioning is on at all times. My husband has a slight hearing loss too. Some captioning is crazy. The script and the words don’t match but as long as I can get the gist of the show, I’m happy.

I love subtitles or closed captioning because I don't hear as well as I used to, but they drive my family nuts! I'm always turning them on and they are turning them off. :giggle Hubby says I should look into getting hearing aids, but it's weird because I can hear him snoring and some little sounds too. It's all the background noise that makes it hard for me to hear clearly and sometimes I hear something way different than what was said... it's been pretty funny and scary at times. I must have some tones that I don't hear well and if they mumble or speak with an accent, I have a hard time understanding. I wish I could get subtitles for IRL or be able to rewind live conversations. :giggle

I have my tv on all night long. Softly enough that I'm not actually hearing what is on but loud enough that it is not extremely quiet in the room. That was something that was suggested to me when I was diagnosed 4.5 years ago.

I don’t use them but it’s probably something I should know more about.

I’m at the moment working on remembering to do alternative text and image descriptions more often....I have a number of visually impaired or blind friends who rely on it.

This is mandatory in all my college web development classes. You will lose points if you don't include those!

We aim to do it on the TLP blog too. Since it's individuals, sometimes it gets missed, but we try.

I usually have subtitles on because we helped Munchkin with reading with them. It also helps him with spelling, especially words that are nothing like they sound.
We turn them off and on depending on what we are watching. If it's after Munchkin's bedtime, subtitles are usually on so we can keep the volume lower, especially on shows where the spoken word is quieter than the music/action.

Oh, I’m fine without it....I’m just trying to be better within the community I work with

Most of the time we don't have subtitles on here. Lately though if I'm trying to watch something on my iPad and my husband is around, I put them on because he is just NOISY! Lol! I don't mind them if I'm watching a foreign film that needs them, but my hubby can't read that fast so he cannot keep up with a foreign language film or show.

I very seldom have them on. I get so distracted reading them that I miss what's actually going on lol. I do turn them on from time to time if everyone else is being super noisy and I can't hear what it is I'm watching.

I LOVE subtitles! DH hates them! LOL So, I watch them when I'm watching TV alone. I have always loved them and used to turn my volume almost off and read the subtitles. I'm weird. Hahaha

We often have them on, but always turn them off when watching The Daily Show. They have the worst closed captioning I've ever seen!
