Stock UP for bad weather? |pad patter 12.3

I have read thru this thread so many times. I am grateful for the miniscule amount of snow we get, and awed at the tons some of you get and it is "normal" !?? lol
brrr...it is 50 degrees outside, someone turn up the heat! lol

I usually have tons on hand in my food storage room, so if a storm is coming I double check the basic (milk, eggs, bread, case or two of water bottles, sandwich stuff, and things to make that don't need electricity.) I also make sure I keep phones charged and have batteries and flashlights on hand.

We get very little snow here on the west coast. We get wet snow that generally doesn't stick around. A few cm here and there is about all we get. If we do get more though, the city panics, with a huge increase in accidents and cars stranded off the road. Like this morning. We got a few cm and now a few schools are closed and the higher elevations are having accidents and cars off the road. We're on a lower elevation so we're getting a little less snow, more slushy, and the roads are fine to drive. I don't worry about stocking up supplies as we seldom get power outages more than a day and if need be, I can walk to a major grocery store in 10 minutes, if it wasn't safe to drive.

I am a winter lover. I loooooove snow. It's why I lived in a wintersport village in Canada for a year. (remembering walking through the knee-high powder snow to the bus stop in the morning to get to work is one of my happiest memories) But I cannot remember ever being snowed in. Last year we had a couple of days of serious glazed frost, as in sane people had to stay inside for a couple of days. It was beautiful. :) People went ice skating on the streets. :yup
I never consciously stock up, but if I had to stay inside for a week I would not have a problem food-wise. I have enough food for a one person household to keep going for a while. After about a week it would be mostly food I don't like too much, but is food nonetheless. ;)

If it snows in Florida, then YES, everyone rushes to the store to stock up on supplies. It's such a rare occurrence, and we don't know how to act. Most of the time we get more ice than snow, and it's just dangerous to be out, especially since none of the vehicles are prepared with the appropriate tires.

Now, hurricanes, the same thing happens, there is a rush to the store for gas and bread and milk. Gas is for generators, because you need to run at least the fridge and alternately, a window AC until. LOL

I do get a panicky feeling when there is a big storm. Right now, we've been having heavy rain and thunderstorms (yesterday and today). It's scary driving around here. I had plenty at home, so I decided not to get out and pick up anything. Hubby is fabulous though, and will stop in all sorts of weather to get me what I need, just to help me avoid falling! Yes, I'm a klutz on top of having back injuries. Hee hee

It only snows here a few times a year. Most people freak out, and I sort of get it because we live in the mountains and our county is not prepared for when it snows since it's so infrequent . BUT, I've only been stuck maybe 2 times & only once without power in the 8 years we've lived here. I always tend to have extra food to survive on so I don't worry too much...I can live without a gallon of milk or a loaf of bread.

We're from Utah and are used to lots of snow, but we lived in Philadelphia for a while and I was always awed by the mad dash everyone made to the store to stock up before a storm. Once the snow starts falling everyone stays in... I found that the best time to make Target run was when there was an inch of snow on the ground! Ha!

Nah... I've never once felt the need to go to the store and stock up no matter what the weather... as another Michigander, I think we are just used to whatever weather comes our way. In fact on Sunday it was a true Michigan day. My husband mowed the lawn, raked a few leaves and then had snow falling by evening. :giggle Three seasons in one day!

I in fact have never actually seen a store have a run on anything... like i've never seen a bread shelf cleaned out because of impending weather.
