The other day I walked into my daughter's room and noticed it smelled very odd. Almost like she left tuna or something gross that had been sitting in her room. (One reason I do not allowed my kids to eat out of the kitchen) Anywho, I looked under the bed thinking maybe something died but all was clear. So I figured I'd figure it out later. *Let me just say that we just had top of the line carpet installed only 1 month ago!!!* argg!!!! So, a day later, it was worse. Almost acidic knock you off your feet, disgustingly ewww! I knew it... one of our dogs had peed! I mean seriously, my dogs are trained to go outside. Shane is a 14 year old part German Shepherd part Lab, but he's getting very lazy and old for that matter. Sometimes I notice the area around his butt is wet if he's been laying down for a while, like he was just too lazy to get up and go out. FANTASTIC! I knew it couldn't have been Diesel, she's our almost 1 year old German Shepherd. She goes to the door and moans when she wants to go out, but the thing that gets me is that she's always in Saige's room (where it all happened). Shane on the other hand is usually sleeping in my son, Madison's room. So, in all honesty I'll never know. So frustrating. I went to PetSmart and picked up some urine cleaner and it ain't workin! Boo!! Thankfully you can't even see the stain b/c the carpet is a dark brownish color. So I caved and called the carpet people and they're coming tomorrow, but there's no guarantee the smell will come up. I might have to remove part of that carpet and put new padding down. So annoying....
Better than if a cat did it. You'd definitely have to replace it then. I had to throw out a comforter when the cat accidentally got locked into my daughter's room. But that was better than the mattress!
We have to keep our dog contained to the "non carpeted" areas of the house because she JUST.WONT.STOP.PEEING on the carpet. She'll come in from outside, and pee on the floor. WTF? So we had all the carpets removed, sealed the subfloor, and new carpet in. And now she's not allowed in there. The 3 times she managed to sneak through? Peed on the floor. #$*(&#*$&
Oh no... does the dog have a urinary tract infection? We had a cat who would go in the strangest places. It turns out, she had a UTI and was trying to "alert" us. I wish she could have held up a little sign instead. I hope you get things straightened out without too much expense and heartache!
I completely feel for you. I have senior age dogs too and their potty training has had some ups and downs lately. I am re-training them as reinforcement. I use crate training and I feel terribly guilty but last night after the big storm we had, I woke up at 6 am to a whiney Wil (our 14 year old cocker spaniel) and when I stepped off the bed, well, you can guess... I did take Wil in for a senior check up, they did bloodwork and he is in pretty good shape (knock on wood)... have you been to the vet with him? I know there are lots of things that cause that, sometimes it's just age related but often it's medical (especially with the wet butt issue).... I do believe that a strong odor in the urine can mean a bladder or kidney infection. Either way, I am sorry. I hate hate hate carpet these days in my house mostly because of the ground in dog hair, but accidental potty troubles is another good reason. We are thinking of carpet in the bedrooms in our new house but the dogs/cats would not be allowed in. They'll be mad. I am sure they are mad enough that they are sitting in their crate at home as we speak.
I'm telling you!! At least the carpet thing happened a couple of days ago, but still. Carpet cleaner guy comes tomorrow morning. Just annoying and so inconvenient!
Sounds like you've got some good suggestions here already. Definitely would rule out a UTI, if the dog pee is that smelly, this likely isn't a single occurrence. And it could be either dog. Diesel might be showing disapproval because you "changed" her hangout place. Shane could be marking. Or even the underpadding or carpet glue might be off-gassing something ammonia-based that the animals are picking up and mistaking for pee (so in dog language, peeing there is now acceptable).
Vinegar definitely works. I hope that it doesn't happen again. My old cat had a problem where she peed on everything, but she also bled as well. I had to throw out a lot of stuff. And it wasn't fixable. We had to make a terrible decision that I will always regret because we couldn't keep her like that.
um no. She was really old, the vet was willing to keep her in a cage with them for a few days and then give her to the cat shelter. But I know the cat shelter here is overloaded and putting cats down daily...especially if they have problems. So rather than have her be scared in a cage and then be put down anyway, I made the decision to do it right then and at least be with her. Damn I'm crying now! And this was a few years ago now!
Hugs, Eryn. I had to put down my two cats, 6 months apart, due to cancer and I just ached for it for years. They were 13 years old and from the same litter and we had them from 8 weeks of age. It is never an easy thing.
