So my accountant went to file our return electronically today, and was told that our social security number had already been used to file a return this year, and he cannot file it now. We will have to mail it in and pending an investigation, he feels we should get our money in August or September at the earliest. Ugh, we needed that return to pay for property taxes and some medical bills...why does this crap happen to us? He thinks that someone typoed and that is how the mistake was made. We pulled our credit report and it doesnt look like identity theft as of yet. So thank goodness for that at least.

Oh no Danica, I really hope it was just a typo. Yikes!

I honestly haven't heard as many people about that as this year!!! :( What a total bummer and grievance! I hope they get it sorted out quick but knowing it's a government agency....don't hold your breath.

I was thinking about this morning and this seems strange. You can't just electronically file. You have to not only use your SSN but you have to have the amount of last year's adjusted gross income. They match the SSN to the AGI and that determines whether they accept or reject. I guess I'm having a hard time understanding how the IRS could have already accepted a return using your SSN when if it was a typo, the other person shouldn't have known your AGI.

I guess the other person could have filed by mail but then you're talking fast work on the part of the IRS to have already processed.

It just seems really strange that this early in tax season (the IRS just started accepting returns 10 days ago) someone would have already had a return accepted using your exact SSN.

oh YUCK! Hopefully it was just a typo! What a pain! So sorry you have to deal with this!

So today the accountant spent an hour on the phone with the IRS preparer's hotline and was told that someone filed using my social security number and filed using my husbands social security number as a dependant on another return. It had two flags. He explained that one would not necessarily need my W2. He said they may have also tried to get a fraudulant earned income credit. The IRS was very vague with him. We have to file by paper now, and I am calling the IRS tomorrow to see if maybe there is a way they can flag the other filing. keep your fingers crossed. Im gonna be on hold for awhile.

OK. This just seems stranger and stranger. How can your preparer be on the phone with the IRS on a weekend when they're only open Monday through Friday? I'm a suspicious person by nature, but this seems really strange. First he's saying they filed without having your PIN from last year (shouldn't have happened... IRS should have rejected the other filing immediately) and now he's saying that he spent an hour on the phone with them when they were closed. (And yes, I did go to the IRS website. That hotline only runs 7-7 Monday through Friday. Again, suspicious by nature.) Sorry, but I'd be asking a lot of questions of your preparer because he doesn't sound like he knows what he's doing.

This is so scary! I would definitely get on the phone ASAP yourself with the IRS and figure out what is going on!

The preparers hotline has saturday hours. We have been using him for 12 years. I am calling irs now. As i was listening to the info prompts and one of them is "if you dont have your AiG, so not sure if they give you that info. It wasnt an option i needed, but may hold later in day for it if i have time out of curiousity to see what happens when you press that.

Oh goodness this all sounds like a bundle of mess. I hope you're able to sort through it all with relative speed and relative ease and that there isn't *too* big a mess to clean up. Scary stuff!

Oh Danica, this just sounds bad. I hope they can flag them and not you.

oh geez what in the world! I agree with Kim that this all sounds a bit skeptical. Hope you get it straightened out asap!

Got off the phone with IRS. They confirmed that someone already filed electronically using our social security numbers. He said there are ways to get around filing without having the AIG. Apparently he said this is the new wave of identity theft is filing a return that is not yours. He said that as long as someone had a SS Number or a credit card number (which could then be used to get your social security number) it was very possible. He could not disclose any info about the other return, and said at first that the account would be flagged, but then said nothing could be done until they received a form stating we are victims of identity theft. Let the fun begin. Sad thing is we never had to start giving all our info out until last year when my husband had all of his health problems. Blah
