Good Morning everyone! Today is Graduation Day for my town's high school. I'll be going as one of my best friends, and my sons best friend (and others) are graduating today. Got me thinking about school, colors, mascots, etc. What was your mascot? (When you were in school, kids or a favorite one?) What were your school colors? Did you have a slogan? Did someone run around in a costume of your mascot? This cracks me up!
In high school... we were the Blue Devils, and it was Royal Blue and White. I don't remember a slogan, though I think we had a Devil running around during sporting games and pep rallies! My kids have the Hornet! School colors are also Royal Blue and White, lol! We do have a kid looking hornet running around sporting events too! We have a bunch of slogans, but Feel The Sting pops out in my head! The Hornet of Holmdel stems from our area history.
What was your mascot? A Thunderbird. What were your school colors? Red black and white so I’ll always love those colors. Did you have a slogan? Not that I can think of. Did someone run around in a costume of your mascot? Yes and I’m pretty sure it was someone I knew because they targeted me and would steal my water and blankets! I still don’t know who it was though.
What was your mascot? Redskins since the history of the area is Native American. A main street in town is named Blackhoof after the Indian tribe and even the town name is derived from 2 different names of Native Americans that lived here. (And, yes, the school still uses it) Quite a few towns in the surrounding area have mascot names of Native American heritage. None of them have changed even with all the controversy over the years. (One is Shawnee Indians) What were your school colors? Red and White Did you have a slogan? Nope, but a cheer the cheerleaders did helped me learn how to spell the town name when I was a kid! Did someone run around in a costume of your mascot? That wasn't a thing when I was in school. Although one of the cheerleaders was the mascot each year. There was 9 cheerleaders in all, 4 for varsity and 4 for junior varsity. The 9th girl was the mascot that cheered with both squads. They wore a different outfit than the other girls. The outfit usually looked like a dress a Native American girl would wear but also a cheerleader's outfit. The mascot got to choose what their outfit looked like so it was different each year. The school (and the city) had always used an Indian head as a logo. With the controversy over the years, both have now changed from that. It is now a "W" with an arrow thru the middle of the letter.
Our Mascot was the Falcon (still is) School colors were Maroon & Gray (still are) No slogan, but each graduating class had a theme... ours (1979) was the class with a difference. (Our class was the largest the school ever had.. we were the peak of the baby boomers... class of around 700) No running around in costume that I remember back then. Not sure of now. ------------------- I run the alumni school memorial and run the FB page for the alumni.
What was your mascot? (When you were in school, kids or a favorite one?) McLean High School, so our mascot was Angus the Highlander What were your school colors? Red and gray Did you have a slogan? No, but we had a song/ditty ... "We're Highlanders born and Highlands bred And when we die, we'll be Highlanders dead So rah! rah! for Highlanders, rah! rah! for Highlanders, rah! rah! rah!" ... funny that I can't remember what I did yesterday, but I can remember that ditty from 50+ years ago, lol!!! Did someone run around in a costume of your mascot? As Rene noted, that wasn't a thing when we were in high school. That said, the cheerleaders and drill team uniforms did have tartan/plaid skirts.
My class was also the largest to graduate before the Catholic high school closed. 1974 was the last year we had 2 high schools in town. My class was 255 and St. Joe's was around 75. So when the 2 schools combined the next year, I think it was around 300 or 310 (both classes were smaller than ours). The class of 2024 had 250 graduates. Our system had several elementary schools in small communities surrounding our town and they joined us either in 7th grade or 9th grade at our junior high school (school was grades 7-9). When my class was in 9th grade, we had 300 moving on to the high school. So we lost about 45 students to due drop outs or moving out of the district in those 3 years at the high school. 2 of the feeder schools no longer exist. 1 was combined into another one. The other one has the students coming into the elementary in town right away. So now we have 2 elementary schools (K-5), a middle school (6-8), and a high school (9-12).
We had 4 elementary schools, 2 Jr High and 1 HS.. they held some of us in the elementary school through 6 th grade due to too many in the Jr High.. my year was the only year of the delay!! Amazing times in the 1970’s that was just the public school.. there was a catholic school too and some transferred into public for HS where others went to a Catholic HS in a nearby town.
we don't really have school colours, but we have Houses in secondary schools - each house has a different colour. I went to too many different schools to remember mine. All 3 of my children were in the same house at their secondary school. Their house colour is Purple. My youngest is house captain for all of another 3 days. Her official last day of school is Friday with the school leavers assembly.
What was your mascot? I went to Strong Vincent High School in Erie PA and our mascot was Colonel Strong Vincent. A little Civil War history - Colonel Strong Vincent was a local Erie man, the son of two wealthy Erie families. He was the commander of the Pennsylvania brigade at Gettysburg and one of the heroes of the Battle of Little Round Top. He was mortally wounded in the battle and posthumously promoted to Brigadier General. What were your school colors? Red and Black Did you have a slogan? Not that I recall Did someone run around in a costume of your mascot? Yes, a senior boy was selected each year to portray Colonel Vincent in a uniform complete with sword. University: Michigan State University Spartans - Green & White Slogans: Go Green! Go White! Also, Spartans Will. Yes, multiple students are chosen to portray Sparty. Their identity is kept secret and only revealed on graduation day when they are allowed to wear the Spartan boots along with their graduation cap and gown.
In high school we were Helix Highlanders and our mascot was a little scotty dog. Green and gray were the school colors and also each class adopted a specific tartan. We had bagpipers wearing kilts in our band and there was a song and maybe a slogan but I don't remember them. There might have been a costumed scotty dog at games but I only went to one so I'm not sure I remember correctly. Another neat themed thing was each building in our school had a Scottish name. I graduated in '89 and have no idea whether this theme has continued. In college we were the San Diego State University Aztecs. I think one of the roads was named Montezuma. I wasn't involved in school spirit stuff, never went to a game, so I don't know much. I think the colors were red and black. Now, at the elementary school where I work, we are sharks, and yes, someone does run around in a shark costume occasionally, such as when the fifth graders parade through the halls at the end of the year and all the other classes stand and applaud them. Our color is red, mainly. Sometimes with black, sometimes with gray, sometimes with white.
