Santa & Elf on the Shelf | pad patter 12.07.2020

We have a Jewish version of Elf on a Shelf, Mensch on a Bench.

I love this. I have to admit, I had to google it, as I was unfamiliar with the Jewish version ... but I think I prefer Moshe the Mensch to that creepy little elf!

Re: kids playing along:

When my son was 7 going on 8, we moved from an apartment in NYC to a house in New Jersey. And for our first Christmas in that house, when he was 8 years old, my son professed to still believe in Santa Claus. However, he later admitted to me that he was only pretending (even to himself) to still believe, because we finally had a fireplace and chimney, and he just wanted to have the experience of anticipating Santa coming down the chimney!

Also: When I was 6 years old, I woke up late at night on Christmas Eve, and overheard my parents chatting companionably while wrapping the presents from Santa for the next morning. The game was up! But I pretended to still believe for another year or two, in part because I didn't want to disappoint my parents, in part because I still wanted to believe.
