Couple of quick questions!

I ran my first 10K race on Sunday and am happy to day, it was awesome and I ran it faster than I've run anything before, which was cool, but the crowds were RIDICULOUS! I seriously never got out on my own and was continually having to make sure someone didn't trip me up. :P But the questions:

first, I have some ridiculously sore muscles, IN MY BACK and SHOULDERS. What? Why?!

second, I've been having some seriously nasty inner ankle pain when I run. Only my right foot, it starts up shortly after I start running, and has been bothering me for about 2.5 weeks. Any ideas why this is? What I can do? I've got two more 10K races upcoming and am still training for a half, whether I do it or not, I am def. doing the training. Am I gonna have to put everything on ice?!!!!

Thanks!

I'd guess for back and shoulders that you were tensing them while you ran. I have to pay attention to that, the more tired I get the more I tense up my shoulders. That's why you see people shaking their arms out. Little ritual to get the stress out of your upper body, which should be totally relaxed.

No idea about the ankle. How old are your shoes? Did you get them at a specialty running store? If not the shoes, I'd probably see a doctor about that to make sure it doesn't turn into something worse.

Thanks Angie,

I switch shoes between my k-swiss tubes, my NB minimals and my newest skecher go-run 2's. The biggest thing though, is that in April, I switched my strike. I was a heel-striker and i moved to fore/mid-foot striking. It did wonders for my endurance, but was killer on my calves. Almost exactly one month after I started, I had the first ankle pain, but it moved to some toe pain and then eventually vanished, so I didn't pay it any mind. that was the day i stupidly ran a 10k in my minimal shoes and was unable to run again for a week due to sore calves. The ankle pain started up regularly about three weeks ago.

it's been bothering me all night, usually only hurts while running.

Anyway, thanks for the input. I am going to call the doctor tomorrow. The offices I usually go to are run by a guy who specializes in sport medicine (though I've never seen him, they always shuttle me off to the lady in the basemen!) so hopefully I can see him and he can help...

I have another 10K scheduled for July 14th and really want to run it!

such a bummer when you struggle with pain when you are training for runs and what not! I have had knee problems pretty consistently - I think it's Runners Knee, and not exactly sure how to run thru it or run and not have it hurt. I do think I need to do physical therapy - at least that is what the orthopeadic dr. told me about a year ago - oops...never took the time to do it. Seeing that I am running a half and a 10k at Disney in February - we are doing the glass slipper challenge!!!

I'm not excited about any of those shoes you listed. What happened with the doctor? If they give you a gait analysis and say the minimalist shoes are ok, then those might work. But neither of those other 2. Lol

You need to go to a running specialty store (not a big box sports store like Dick's, but a store that focuses solely on running) and get properly fitted for shoes. They will look at your old shoes for the wear patterns, and your feet, an get you in a pair that will work for you. If you can get the doctor to do a gait analysis first, even better. The gait analysis will tell you if you need neutral or stability, so then when you get to the running store it will just be a matter of finding one that feel good.

And Amanda - get thee to PT ASAP. They'll fix you up so you can run pain-free, as well as figure out how you got into that mess in the first place. (Gait analysis / proper shoes etc)

doc can't see me until next Monday. :P
I actually love the skechers go runs, they are SO comfy! :)
getting to a running specialty store is not easy for me. Even getting to a sport store at all is a challenge.

I went in search of hills last week friday (I found some bumps) and my ankle did not hurt at all while running up.

sunday's easy run was also great, no pain. I've not been since though, as i caught my son's cold. :P Hoping to go out tomorrow and see how the ankle is doing...thanks for your input!

I guess they're ok as long as you're sure minimalist shoes work for you. If you can run without injury, then it it's all good. Glad it's doing better!!

Don't cancel the appointment. :)

Oh and for what its worth - I can only run a few miles in a minimalist shoe. After that I need some cushion. But, take that with a grain of salt, because I'm a fatty. :giggle

lol! My Mom runs in minimalist shoes and she loves them! Not sure I would give my Mizuno Wave Elixirs too quickly though... I love how light they are and any other shoe I try feels "heavy". So I just stick with those. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Right?

the cost of running shoes makes me choke and cough and slink away slowly.

Cheapest sport, really.

Wanna know what I've spent on cycling?

Makes the $100 shoes look like a bargain.

no canceling here, Angie. I'm off to the doc's in an hour. and good thing too, during my 11km run yesterday, the OTHER ankle started to hurt as well. two painful ankles. and I'm running another 10k race on Sunday, and finally signed up for a half-marathon (in October). REALLY hope he can help and doesn't just tell me i have to stop running. :(

back from (very nice) doctor who is sending me to get a foot analysis and inserts (is that what they're called?) for my shoes BECAUSE my freaking right leg is SHORTER than my left?! The inserts scare me....a lot. as does the whole podiatry thing. I'm not sure how it works, if they are for only one pair of shoes and when you get new ones...what then?! expense? oh. lots of stuff. but I'm willing to give it a try if it'll stop my ankle hurting. and OMH. a shorter LEG?! sheesh. didn't see that one coming.

I think you can put them in any shoes once you have them. Hopefully it's thin enough that you won't need to change sizes. Glad he figured out what was wrong and that it's nothing too serious. An insert ain't no thang... beats 6 weeks off!

seriously. I'm afraid I'd never start again if I had to take time off!
