I have to admit that I pretty much suck at the carving part and my youngest DD gets so frustrated with not being able to do it herself, so this year, I ordered some faces for her to put on the pumpkins. They're from Hearthsong.

Definitely come visit some Halloween Julia! A lot of families here now take their kids to the shopping mall for trick or treating. It is SO much fun seeing all the kids dressed up, and a lot of the parents dress up too. All the merchants have candy for the kids, so they trick or treat there instead of going house to house. Much safer and lots of fun!

Well, I thought you carved that one and I was pretty impressed!!

If you can use a long very thin knife, that is the best type to use for carving pumpkins. There are books that have patterns similar to the ones in the links I sent you. You tape them on your pumpkin and poke holes in it to mark where you are going to cut. You don't really need a pattern book. You can find plenty online.

    Have fun!!!

this is one we did for a contest... it won an honorable mention because it rotted out before they judged the contest... it's a bird cage. A raven is sitting on a perch that is attached to a clock motor so it moved back and forth. It was pretty cool. Just not enough staying power.
