Pad Patter 7/19: Do you know the history behind your name?

I'm loving everyone's stories .. mine is not too exciting. My name means "having to be loved," "deserving to be loved," or, simply, "worthy of love" and after 6 miscarriages my Mum finally got me and naturally I was SO adorable that she felt I was deserving of big sloppy love ... so tada Amanda it is.

Sadly, they called me Mandy (and sometimes very annoyingly Mandy Pandy) until I turned 14 when I took a stand declairing that I hated everything about being a Mandy and refused to answer to it (and DO NOT even try it because I HATE it and I will ignore you in a very rude manner!!) :giggle

My name is Erin Elizabeth. My dad was in college when my mom was pregnant and they would watch the Waltons together when he got home from work late at night. My Mom really liked the girls Erin and Elizabeth, so they decided to name me after them. At least that is the story they tell me.

ohhh so many interesting stories I almost forgot I need to go and eat (not often happens!)

Leandra: I always wandered if you were (or your parents) of latin origins, we have lots of Leandro in Portuguese & Spanish but I only know one Leandra apart from you...LOVE the name!!!!

Loving the stories!

Mine tortured me during childhood and teenage years...
My mum watched soaps - & here , Dalis, I would have much rather she named me after a soap character than Cynthia :giggle
but she read English literature.
One of her books main lady was Cynthia, my second name is Sofia, my paternal grandma-
Thing is...Latin America 1958....NONE could pronounce my name...my teachers would take their time trying to call me (my surname is double barreled Arabic, my parents are from Syria, so no easy option there)

in Brazil, I was called Cidinha by most friends, is a shortening for Aparecida... (as in the appearance of the Virgin Mary) because that is near the sound of Cynthia in Portuguese....
In Argentina I ended up being Cindia or Silvia....

The name didn't become popular in Latin America until the 70s, still, people would go for a simpler spelling...
So I was delighted when I came to Europe....until I found out why my friends called me Madam Cynth..... and HERE is why

:giggle

So interesting to hear the name origins. Mine is pretty simple. Mom was Sandra and dad was Raymond so I was going to be a combo of both names, either Raysa or Rae and they decided on Rae. I hated my name as a kid but I don't mind it now.

My name is Natasha - which means born on Christmas day...but I wasn't :giggle
My mom told me that my dad was in love with Natalie Wood, and wanted to name me Natalie, but my mom wouldn't let him, so they settled on Natasha
My middle name is Guy Ting - it was given to by my my chinese grandfather (he has given all of the middle names in our family - even his great grandkids...it's a tradition). It means "like a willow - bends but never breaks"

Natalie Wood's daughter is named Natasha! What that the compromise or totally coincidental??

My full name is Amy Nicole. My mom's favorite book was Little Women and she loved one of the character's names - Amy. So, I was named after Amy from Little Women. And she loved Nicole which was the name of a character on some soap opera she watched occasionally. My dad really wanted my middle name to be Elizabeth (my great grandmother's name) but my mom eventually wore him down and my middle name was Nicole!

Um, well ...

I was supposed to be named Natalie Jean. Right before I was born my dad said, "What do you think of Julie Ann?" My mom liked it and that's what they named me. Turns out, Julie Ann was an ex-girlfriend of my dad's.

And yes, friends, my parents ARE divorced! :lmao

O M G ! ! ! ! !

I don't think I can see you as a meanie or rude, Mandy Pandy. LOL!! btw. I like Amanda so much better than Mandy.

My Mum didn't know what to call me, my dad wanted to call me Katie. My Mum didn't like the name Katie. I was nameless for seven days. Around the time I was born a friend of my parents was killed in a terrible, terrible road accident; and though not directly because of her, they named me Juliette.

I hated it as a child, the persistent 'where's Romeo?' thing eventually got to me so much that when I was around 12 years old I started asking people to call me Katie instead. Which lasted all of three weeks before the school told my Mum, lol!

I was almost a Mary Jo (after my great-grandma and grandma) but my grandma thought that was too old fashioned. My mom had a friend of a friend named Kimberly, so my grandma liked that. But someone told my mom it would be easier for me to write/spell if she made it Kimberlee. She admits that it is kind of ironic that she worried about my ability to spell/write since I overcame her limited expectations and am a writer and have two Masters degrees. LOL.

My brother is Matthew Dylan, named after a character on the TV show Gunsmoke. LOL.

My mom found my name in a book and liked it, nothing too interesting there. My middle name is Jo after my great grandpa. His name was Vigo Johanes but when he came to the US he had everyone call him Joe. I hated my name growing up, I grew up on the Mexico/US border and a lot of people couldn't pronounce it, people still argue with me that it's really Kelly?! As an adult I appreciate that it's different, I can't imagine being in the room with another person with the same name, totally foreign to me. Keely means beautiful one which is kind of nice. My middle name is way too southern and cutesy sounding for my taste but I really appreciate the sentiment behind it.

I was named Mary Sandra for my Mom's sister Mary. She couldn't remember where the Sandra came from but there were several girls in my classes with the same name so I figure it was a name in the news.

hmm... not much of a story ... Li Li is my given chinese name.. Wee is my surname/family name. Every girl who carries the Wee family name (2nd generation) will be named WEE LI XXXXX . Mine is pretty simple Li Li... my sisters are Li Tza ( pronounced as Lisa), Li Queen (yes!! there is a chinese character for Queen). I was name after a Chinese Hong Kong singer in the 70's

My mom said I was always going to be called Kerry but the lady next door had her a month before I was born and called her Kerry so my mom changed my name to Karen, which was a good thing cause I married into the perry name so Kerry perry ??? Hmmm not good lol
