Pad Patter 3.22.15: Fine Arts/Performing Arts in School

I remember learning that about Amber in a chat sometime!! I LOVE the photos!!

And way to go to your son and daughter, Jen! My boys aren't quite old enough yet, but i won't be surprised if they give it a try. They both love going to plays and dramas. I would love to take them to see some Broadway shows, I think they would love it. Our school does a production each year and we always attend and I see the hours that they put in each week--it is a huge time commitment, but my students who are involved never complain and always love it!

I remember that chat, and I even got to see one of the photos as she linked us up to a LO...... stunning!!!!!!!!!!!!

the commitment during school is something serious... but like you said, they dont complain and I am quiet sure even if not going into a performing career , it gives the kids skills that they will be able to use in the future...if you have the commitment level the theatre calls for, and manage to enjoy being on stage...is a huge asset for many professions...

seeing as some of you have had experiences and many said they would love to be able to sing..... can you imagine if we were near geographically? we could have the Pad's Glee Club!!!!!!!:heartlub

Even with the commitment all the kids in our performance are instagramming laments about it being over :). It's so great to see them loving it so much. I remember that feeling. Like... what next? hehe. Jacob is already looking forward to next year!

Wow! Great shots, Amber! :D

They didn't have time for Kaylee to present her skit until yesterday. Her partner still forgot several of her lines. (They were allowed to call for lines, but it knocked down their individual scores.) Kaylee managed to keep it together anyway and got a rock solid 100! :yesss She also got lots of compliments on her accent. Her character was a sassy country bumpkin with really bad grammar. I swear we don't normally talk that way, even if we do live in Texas. :giggle The other character had a French accent that Kaylee couldn't manage at all, but her partner actually speaks French, so that part worked out well for both of them! :thumbsups

My son went through a theater phase when he was younger and did a bit of professional theater here in Chicago. He played a role two years in a row in Miracle on 34th Street, and had to dye his hair red each Christmas. I'll have to see if I can find photos. I know there are a few on my 2010 pages. His favorite thing though was being a super (supernumerary) with the Lyric Opera. They always needed boys, so there would be a wild band of boys hanging out together backstage... they know all the secret stairways and trap doors! He found School of Rock in middle school and that's now his performance thing... not theater. I miss his theater days, but I do love seeing his rock shows too!

Clara got roped into being in Miracle the first year and she enjoyed it. They asked her to come back the next year with Alex, but she had already been cast in the Joffrey Ballet's Nutcracker which she did for two years. She did her school musical one year (she was Magic Carpet in Aladdin)... but dancing is more her thing... she doesn't have to speak that way!

I'm with her... the thought of being on stage and speaking freaks me out. I'm not sure I was ever in any kind of real play.

I love seeing this thread. My daughter was part of drama club in high school, behind the scenes, and yes they put in so many hours of work. She went on to major in Theatre, Costume Design in college. She is currently working for a local small theatre company but will be heading back to Colorado Shakespeare Festival again this summer!

Nope not me, not willingly. Except in Sunday School you have to be in the plays. I went to such a tiny high school which did a Junior Play and Senior Play. I managed to be stage crew in the Junior Play but had to play a part in the Senior Play. I did not like it. I am quieter in person than I am on the board (I'm usually quiet on forum boards as well)

Found some of the photos!

Here's my 9 year old going red...

The reason for the dyed hair... he played Thomas Mara, Jr. in the courtroom scene and it was a sight gag for him to have the same red hair as his "dad"...

And just one from the Thanksgiving Day Parade of Alex's second year of Miracle...

In kindergarten, my class put on a nativity play. I was the star, not as in "the star of the show" but as in "the star in the sky". Most of the play was really just singing "The Friendly Beasts" with everyone dressed up as animals, and I asked why everyone got to sing except me. The teacher said she was sorry, but there just isn't a verse in the song about a star, but the star is important so there needs to be one, and that's just how it is. So I wrote my own verse. :giggle I was such a stubborn kid.

I am the star, all shiny and bright
I guided three wise men through the night

...and I can't remember the third verse. I'll have to ask my mom.

In retrospect, I wonder if she intentionally picked me as the star because I couldn't sing, or if it was just random. I mean, most 5-year-olds have less than stellar (no pun intended) singing voices. But regardless, when I showed up the next day and told her there is a verse in the song about a star now, she couldn't exactly say no anymore. :giggle

This story is PRICELESS! I seriously hope it is on a scrapbook page somewhere. Love it.

Oh Lorry, you definitely need to do a page with a star up in the sky and document/journal that so down the road, your girls will have that story,. that is absolutely precious and priceless! Must be scrapped even if you have no photo to go with it!

You know, I never have scrapped it! I'll see if my mom can remember the last verse next time I Skype her. I'm sure she has a picture but it might mean waiting forever for her to scan it. The words I could get right away though, if she remembers. :)
