So... if any of you are my FB friends, you have seen what has consumed my week. My son was Aladdin in the school play this week! He was just awesome, as was the whole performance. (My DD was a white monkey for one song... she's in this photo as well. Love.)

They worked SO.HARD. Like 3-4 x a week after school for the past 2 months. And it was an AMAZING show. And I'm not just saying that b/c my kid was the star :giggle

It was so cool to see Aladdin on Broadway in February as well. Not exactly the same, hehe... but I loved BOTH shows :heartslub

Interestingly, I was also the lead in our school play in High School. And I LOVE the theater. Were any of you thespians? Anyone do it for a living now or in the past?
Anyone with proud mom stories to share related to the theater?

Let's hear it! And pics always welcome. :photo

I was in HMS Pinafore in HS.. (was in the Chorus).. It was a lot of fun! (Also in the Senior HS variety show) I have friends who are in the theatre.. pretty awesome.. Jen, your son looks like he was enjoying himself. Glad the show was a success and also glad your daughter was in the show with your son. Great photo and wonderful memories for all of you :)

I was never in a play, but I LOVE watching them. I didn't get brave enough to do any singing until I was about 25 and I joined my church choir. It was YEARS before I got over the feeling that maybe they were going to kick me out for not knowing what I was doing. Ha ha.

Our school does an "Operetta" every year and they rotate through the grades, so it's K-2 one year, then 3-5 then 6-8. Anyway, this year it's 3-5 and it'll be the only time both of my boys will be able to do an Operetta together in their whole time at that school. My youngest is a total ham and has requested a BIG acting part and a solo song. We'll see if he gets it or not. He's in 3rd grade. My fifth grader is probably happy to hide in the chorus.

Jen! Congrats to your son as the star of the play! Wow that is AWESOME! And your DD as a monkey ... too cute that they could be in it together! Love that photo! :beat

I love Broadway, but like to watch, not perform. My daughter, however, has been active in the Drama club for the past 2 years ... but she is on the crew side of things. This week is tech week so they are there every night after school through dinner. They have also been working since Jan )2-3x per week on this production. The play is Annie Jr. and the performances are this weekend. :)

I think our little Chase has a flair for song and stage. They don't really offer anything for him in elementary school, but we're hoping as he gets older he'll get a chance to test the waters.

Congratulations to your kids Jen, I can tell you're bursting at the seams with pride! So exciting for all of you!

I used to be in every single theater piece at school since kindergarten.

My kids are all theater children. We live in a small town so we have a childrens theater that does a camp each year. In one week they learn an entire hour long musical, songs and choreography as well as lines, and perform it. It's amazing what 50 1st-8th graders can accomplish in one week! Now that mine are almost all in high school, they do plays in school and I love to go see them. Theater is fabulous and fun and really helps them come out of their shell!

How fun, Jen! I was always in the chorus of the musicals we did in junior high and high school. The ones I remember doing were How the West was Won, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and Brigadoon. Brigadoon was my favorite. Still love those songs. I tried out for a few solos (which I didn't even come close to getting LOL), but I never had any interest in the speaking parts.

Kaylee wants to be an actress and is in her first theater class this semester. She's having a blast. She's just had to memorize a skit that she's to perform with another girl for the class. Kaylee has the meatier role, and I've been really impressed with how she's done with all the lengthy dialogue! They have to present tomorrow, and as of today her partner was still forgetting a lot of her lines. Eek. Keep your fingers crossed for them! :)

I went to a performing arts high school and was a theatre major. Even though I did not pursue it beyond HS, it was such an enriching experience. I learned so many things about myself. And believe me, being a high school teacher, I still have to practice my acting and improv skills a lot! Can't wait to see some LO's on this Jen!

That is wonderful, Jen! So much fun for them, and all that hard work makes you all proud!

I was not a theater person. If I would have been, it would have been behind the scenes. So far, neither of my kids have shown any interest, but that could change as they get older.

I do love going to the theater/Broadway. My favorite was when Miss Saigon was still around. That was years ago, but my favorite play to date. After that, I also loved Beauty and the Beast, lol! I'm hoping to get to a couple shows this summer in the city, especially with my boys. That would be so much fun! They've only been to Radio City Music Hall.

Hope she does well today!

Congrats Jen!!!!!
Sarita always wanted to move to the US because you guys give much more attention to the whole art thing than here.... only in secondary school they take things a bit more seriously here... (she still wants to live in the USA, so anyone with artsy kind of sons between 19/23....I'm open to meeting future sons in law LOL)

I can imagine how happy you must have been and how emotional it is...I still cry at each of Sarita's performances!!!!

I was a theatre major in college as well (actually too funny but Amber and I discovered this about each other just last week). I did a bit of acting in college but my interests were more behind the scenes mostly in carpentry and props. I worked professionally for about 5 years ending my career as the props master at a regional theatre in Delaware. I still miss theatre but I don't miss the crazy schedules.

AMBER! Oh dear... that last pic :giggle

You look awesome, girl! LOVING seeing you in this new light.

I was in a junior high play, A Rocket in His Pocket. I played the female football coach. I got the part because I could project my voice well. It was really fun and I had a crush on a boy in the play. Good 'ole memories....

I remember learning that about Amber in a chat sometime!! I LOVE the photos!!

And way to go to your son and daughter, Jen! My boys aren't quite old enough yet, but i won't be surprised if they give it a try. They both love going to plays and dramas. I would love to take them to see some Broadway shows, I think they would love it. Our school does a production each year and we always attend and I see the hours that they put in each week--it is a huge time commitment, but my students who are involved never complain and always love it!

Our sixth grade class put on several plays, and I was the lead in all of them- this was still elementary school. For some reason, junior high sort of freaked me out so I didn't even try out which I regret. I think I was just scared of putting myself out there - little fish, big pond kind of thing.
