Pad Patter 2/27: The Dress

White and gold every time. DH was black and blue all the way. The office was totally split. It brightened up a boring day debating this as the day went on.

It was even on the tv news here and they showed the dress in store - royal blue and black.

It caused quite the controversy in my house - evenly split between blue/black and white/gold.
It's always blue/black for me. Interestingly, one of the articles I read said that people who work with color a lot were more likely to see it as blue and black. I would think that would skew heavily for most of us here seeing blue/black but so far that hasn't been the case.

It honestly changes almost every time I look at the thing. Sometimes it changes WHILE I'm looking at it. I'm not sure what that says about me, LOL.

It's just an optical illusion but my DS put it well when he said that the reason it's getting such press is b/c most optical illusions are evident to MOST people. Like this image. Square A and Square B are the EXACT SAME SHADE. But we ALL see them as different at 1st glance (unless you make your vision unfocused, then I can see them the same)

However, The Dress is split, and changes drastically for some even under the exact same conditions (like for me). So, the illusion is not the same for everyone. Which makes it unique. Interesting theory by my 16 year old.

Love this quote: "The dress phenomenon, according to neuroscientist Dale Purves of Duke University, shows how strongly people are wedded to the idea that colors are properties of objects, when they are in fact made up by the brain."

this is really, really doing my head in....now every time I come to this thread I see it a different color 9either white gold or blue black) and whatever I do, there is no change on squares A & B, they are definitely different.

I know the statement is true, colors are made by the brain but obviously most of the human race processes light the same way, or we wouldn't have a fashion industry or designers would have to give color to elements & papers.... I wonder if the human race is ready to go another step forward on the use of the brain.... too much for my head at this point

I saw white and gold but when I scrolled back up slowly I saw blue and grey.

White/gold. I can see where people might see a touch of light blue in the "white" section because of shadows in the picture but really I don't see black & blue at all.

Ditto

I asked my kids. 6-year-old says "blue and orange" and 4-year-old says "white and black". So my kids are freaks. lol

I DL that checkerboard image and checked the colors of those squares in Photoshop, LOL. Just to make sure they weren't messing with me. And sure enough. The color dropper says they are the same. Weird.

I only see white/gold but have seen the actual photo with blue/black. My only comment is that the dress is pretty as white/gold and ugly as blue/black.

LOL Sandy, I thought the same!!!!!!!

and Jen...the color dropper told you it was same color but you still see them different?
I need to get Sarita on this case, she always has an answer to stop me obsessing with things like this :giggle

Yes, I see them different, but if I allow my eyes to become unfocused and stare at it, I can get the shades to become the same.

I see periwinkle with goldish brown lace. That is all I have ever seen. It hasn't changed.

I first saw white and gold. Then after reading through all the comments I went back to it and now it's blue and black. That has got to be the weirdest thing ever.
