Nicknames | Pad Patter 3.2

Hubby's family did this... he was always Peter... when we started dating, he was Pete... but then after time, (i don't even think I realized it), I started calling him Peter. It's a joke now.
What's hilarious to me - I don't even shorten his name in scrapbook layout naming to Matt. It's either M or Matthew.

But, that was sort of the point for me -- for him to have options., whether he uses them or not.

Yep! I like that he has options. It wasn't until his favorite cousin started calling him Matt that he let anyone else call him Matt. Before that, he corrected everyone to Matthew.

My dad called me Cher-Cher as a kid, friends called me Cher, but when Sonny and Cher became popular I was accused by non-friends of calling myself Cher b/c Cher was popular ... so I starting insisting that my family and friends use my real name (Cheryl). Gotta love high school ... not.

Oh plenty at our house!

I usually introduce myself as Beverly because when I say Bev, people hear Beth. People have called me Beverage from time to time and think they are original - NOT! I have also gotten Beaver-ly (like the animal), Bevie, Beb-ber-be (really?), and Aunt B (from the Andrew Griffith TV show). I will stick with Bev, thank you very much. Or Mom or even Wife.

When our son Paul was little we called him Sport. We also used a code-name for him of Bob, so we could talk about him when he was present. He never figured it out. Middle son had a nickname but it is escaping me at the moment (old age?). We did have a friend that always called him Markie-Mark. He did give himself a cat name of Markie-no when he was young because we had a cat named Domino.

Daughter is Sweetie or My Little China Girl (from David Bowie song & yes, she is from China). We called her Mei Mei before she arrived, which is little sister in Mandarin. We named her Mei, but her Chinese name also contains Mei.

Aunt B (from the Andrew Griffith TV show).

My mom's name was Beverly and she also went by Bev but spelled it Beve. I have 3 cousins that also had an Aunt Betty on their father's side of the family but only my mom was "Aunt B" to them, and yes it was from the tv show.

What's funny is my kid has a name that can be shortened - Matthew. And his friends and cousins call him Matt. But I don't. His dad and I both call him Matthew.

my brother's name is Matthew and when he was little he used to correct people who called him Matt. Then as he got older he became Matt on his own. I call him Matty or Maffy and he calls me J

my son is Braeden, he had people try to shorten it to Brady and he would have none of that. He is still Braeden (24) but his dad will call him Braeds and is the only person to do so. We all call him Braeden as do his friends. He gets Brandon a lot which frustrates him to no end, as does Brenden.

This is like the weirdest thing! I have so many people who think my name is Brittney when I introduce myself. When I worked at a call center for customer service I was almost always called Brittney. It's like people only listen to half your name.

Kim is short for Kimberly, so I primarily go by a nickname, but it doesn't feel like a nickname. I tried to get people to call me Kimberly for a while when I was in elementary school and Different Strokes was popular, but it didn't take. I did have one co-worker ages ago who called me Kimberly, and one teacher in high school who called me Kimmy.

At my current job I would sometimes get called Jill. The actual Jill started at about the same time, and we often worked parallel positions, so it was just a mental interchangeability for one of my supervisors. (Jill would get called Kim as well.) Jill has since moved on to a full time job elsewhere, but I still get called Jill from time to time as sort of an inside joke. :)

DS is Matthew and we have always called him by the full name, but a lot of his friends call him Matt. It still sounds wrong to me every time.

DD is Kaylee. Among friends they are often called Kale or Kales. We often call them Kiwi at home, something that started years ago as just an affectionate play on the sound of the name. To go along with that, the rest of us got fruit nicknames as well. DS is Mango, DH is Papaya (kinda like Papa), and I am lemon (the closest sounding fruit to Mom). Kiwi and Mango get used often, Papaya and Lemon not so much. I do put the initial "L" on things when I am marking them as mine though, since K for Kim or M for Mom are not unique initials in our house. :lol

I wanted a nickname when I was a kid. I don't remember why. Perhaps because Michele was such a common name and I never had a class without another Michelle. Around late elementary I tried to get people to call me Shelly but it didn't happen. In middle school an aunt encouraged me to try again with the nickname Chel. I signed all my letters to her that way, and she addressed me the same, but no one else ever used the name. I don't think I ever cared again after that.

It helps, perhaps, that I ended up marrying into a very uncommon name: Kendzie. It's a shortened Polish name my husband's dad shortened in college.

Not a nickname, but my sister had a pet name for me when we were teenagers: Micheleywely. I liked it. I continued the silly naming of younger sibling by calling my brother Tiny Tikey (his name is Michael); he's now about 6 inches taller than me.

I wanted to give my kids many nickname options so I gave them both first and middle names with lots of possibilities (except my son has a three letter first name, but is middle name is long and has nicknames). Turns out my daughter and my son are perfectly happy with their full names and haven't ever wanted nicknames, and my husband and I have never called them anything but their given names. My middle child however, turned out to be non-binary and changed their name a few years ago. So far I haven't heard any nickname possibilities.

Nowadays, working in an elementary school, I'm hearing "Mrs. Kendzie" more than anything else.

My 4 year old brother couldn’t say Michele so I was Meachy. He later was rhyming names and meachy turned into peachy. He and one of my other brothers still call me peach or peachy (I am 58 and he is 46)…I guess it stuck!

I love, love, love nicknames. No one in my family has ever called me anything but my full name but I had all sorts of nicknames growing up from friends: Lee, LeeBli, Leejo Peejo, Leeander Gander... An old boss from my high school job gave me LA (which I use online, too) when that's how he denoted me on the work schedule. No one IRL calls me that, however.

You can imagine how many people mispronounced my name growing up so I also answered to LeeAn, LeeAndrea, LeeAhndrea, Lee---- (pregnant pause with a quizzical look on their face) which were not nicknames but not my actual name, either.

Nowadays, my bestie calls me Leelee but she's the only person who uses a nickname for me based on my actual name. My boyfriend only uses my name when he's speaking about me to someone else or if he's saying something really serious/significant; otherwise, it's "baby" or "honey."

Becca is short for Rebecca. My family called me Becky and still do growing up. Unless in trouble, then I got the Rebecca Ann. My husband's name is Phillip and everyone calls him Phil but me around here hehe. I for some reason just can't seem to call him Phil. I call him Phillip and he calls me Rebecca. But my daughter, Savannah, we all call Vannah hehe.

Mine is Kelly, which always felt like a nickname even though it is my full name. I always wanted a more grown-up/serious name so named my 3 kids Joshua (Josh), Abigail (Abby) and Amelia (Mollie). They have the formal names if they want them as well as nicknames for everyday. We did the "Supreme Court Justice Abigail middle-name last-name" trick when naming them so we didn't end up with a name that sounded like a baby, not a grown person. I have been called Kells, Kel, Kelly-Belly and Kells-Bells, but am looking forward to picking a grandma name someday! I want to go by Honey or KayKay, but we shall see- usually the first grandkid picks the name around here. (And my kids are 22, 19 and 17 so we hopefully won't have grandkids for a while yet.) My initials are KTP, so I decided on KayTeaPea (my initials spelled out ) as my online scrappy name back when 2Peas was a thing 20 years ago.

My name is Judith but have always been called Judy. I also answer to Jude as in Hey Jude.
My husband is Michael or Mike or sometimes Mikey. Mikey has a particular tone of voice that goes with it that can't be conveyed in writing.

Our kids are James and Elizabeth. James we called Jim from the moment he was born. As an adult he goes by James and we have the hardest time remembering to call him James. Elizabeth had so many possible nicknames that we always called her Elizabeth. As an adult she's shortened it to Liz.

I've always been my dad's little Care Bear
I also go by Kar ... I've had multiple other nick names as well. My native American name is Silent Bear
