No, not the dude The food! Today is Meatloaf Appreciation Day! I feel like most people I know have really strong opinions about it. They either love it or hate it. Personally, I love it and so does my family, for the most part. I haven't made it in awhile, but now that it's cooling off some and I don't mind having the oven on again, I may make some time soon. I don't really "follow" a recipe, I just kind of wing it as far as measurements and things. Do you like meatloaf? Do you have a favorite recipe?
LOL!!! I love it and I made it yesterday! I use my mom's very easy recipe and I can get 5 small loaves out of it. I freeze 4 of them. Just last week I used the last one I had made in May. For those that don't know, I hate to cook so when I do it has to be very simple with as few ingredients as possible. My meatloaf recipe has 5 ingredients plus 1 added ingredient when actually baking it.
We love meatloaf! One of our favorite meals is meatloaf, mashed potatoes and green beans. My hubby makes it and he pretty much uses Mom's recipe, but he knows it by heart. He puts ketchup on top before it goes in the oven and more ketchup when it comes out. Now, I want meatloaf for dinner. LOL
@Cherylndesigns I smother mine with ketchup when eating it as well! I put tomato juice on mine when cooking it... keeps it really moist.
I think we need recipes and photos. Meatloaf seems to be an American thing. I know it is made in a loaf shape with minced (ground) beef. But don't have a recommended recipe yet!
Yes, in fact we are having it today. I used to use the recipe on the Quaker Oats package, but now I just wing it too. I remember years ago when everyone was going gaga over Ann Lander’s (advice columnist) recipe for meatloaf. They probably served it with Jello, another food relegated to bygone times. I also like cold meatloaf sandwiches, yum!
Yes, we are a pro-meatloaf family. I don't have a recipe, per se, but a set number of spices & condiments that I use when I make it and the amounts of each changes depending on what I'm feeling like that day.
I love the idea of making small loaves and freezing them! I've never tried it! Can't have meatloaf without mashed potatoes for sure!! As a rule, I don't like ketchup at all, but when it comes to meatloaf, it's a must!! I put tomato juice on mine when cooking it as well...so yum! It's basically what then name says... a loaf of meat lol. I saw a meme that said it's meat cake with ketchup frosting haha The basic recipe has ground beef, onion, bread crumbs or something similar, egg, and if you're like me, whatever else you want to throw in there haha. The topping is ketchup or ketchup/brown sugar combo...or something similar. I love meatloaf sandwiches as well!! Wow, Jello...can't remember the last time I made it, but I probably have a box or two in the back of my pantry lol Same. I just toss it in lol
I am not a big fan of meatloaf but ONCE many many moons ago I did one and my family loved it! To me it looks like dog canned food. I wonder if I just had never had a "good" slice of it.
@HavaDrPepper - same - must have lots of ketchup. The tomato sauce addition sounds good, too. We'll have to try that!
Oh, you haven't had "good" meatloaf, then. Honestly, we used to go to a lot of pitch ins at church and some of the meatloaf people brought looked like dog food. Ugh
Huge meatloaf fan..but not a fan of the ketchup based ones .. Mine is my own recpie..and is q lot like a giant meatball..lol Sometimes I'll stuff with cheese Sometimes we do mini meatloafs so everyone gets there own...lol We like meatloaf
Depends on how you make it. Mine looks nothing like canned dog food. But then mine has vegetable soup in it so I've got potatoes, corn, green beans etc. And, if I grab the wrong can of vegetable soup, I might have the alphabet in there too!
I've always liked meatloaf. Here's the recipe I grew up on: 1 lb beef 1 lb sausage (Jimmy Deans Italian sausage) 1/2 C Saltine Cracker crumbs 1/2 C Evaporated Milk 1/4 C chopped onion (I rarely chop onions so I use dry chopped onion instead) 1/2 C chopped Green pepper (I usually omit this because I never buy green peppers) 1 tsp salt 1/4 tsp dry mustard 1/4 tsp sage 1 egg Mix all together. Put in a loaf or pan and top with a layer of Ketchup. Bake at 350 for 1 - 1 1/2 hours until cooked through.
ok, I like meatloaf, but not the usual ketchup based meatloaf. Gag. Mine is a version that I call Tex Mex Meatloaf.... no ketchup, so it is not a "true" meatloaf. It's got Turkey (or Beef) Ground Meat, Salsa, Frozen Corn, Egg Whites, and a smidge of bread crumbs. Served with a side of black beans, and guac/chips.
