Who's ready for some more book club selections?!?! It's time for another batch of books to read together! We have another round of voting completed and we have another batch of great books to read together. The book for March 2025 is Lula Dean's Little Library of Banned Books. Feel free to read our book club books in any order that you choose and when you've finished reading, come back here and tell us what you think. Please label spoilers. We have a new trick for hiding spoilers. Type whatever you want and then highlight the spoiler portion and click the + button above and select Spoiler. If that doesn't work (seems to be funky on Macs) just highlight your text and change the color to white >>>This is a super secret spoiler alert!<<< like I did right there. Just a note, anyone is welcome to join in with our book club reading at any time and join in the discussion! The more the merrier! Happy reading!
This was a DNF for me. A little too preachy and unnuanced for me even though I agreed with the "sermon."
Fortunately, through my county library, I have access to Hoopla which has a different approach to audiobooks than my regular library. My regular library has only a few copies available and you always have to get on the waiting list to get one - it's usually like 6 months+. Hoopla seems to have unlimited "copies" but you can only access 10 items per month (includes ebooks and movies too). Since I only get audiobooks, the limit isn't a problem. It's a good deal if one of the items you want just happens to be on their site (pretty limited).
I have Hoopla too and it's the best thing in the world. Our Hoopla has a different selection than the other portion of the e-library (Libby) though, so sometimes they have what I want on Hoopla and sometimes I have to do the stupid hold requests with Libby. I definitely check Hoopla first always though!
That's exactly the same for us. Interesting that different libraries have different selections on Hoopla. I guess it makes sense but I didn't know it worked that way.
I grabbed a digital copy this morning from our library. I'll start it next week. I got This Is Why We Lied by Karin Slaughter (skip the line borrow for a week).
I actually read a TLP book pick in the assigned month! I even had to wait for it on hold while others finished it. I can't say I thoroughly enjoyed this book since it's all about many horrible things bigoted people are doing in the U.S. that have been in the news so much but it is so well written, fast paced and engaging, a good balance of seriousness and humor, and has such important messages and some wonderful characters, that I give it 5 stars. My favorite characters are the doctor because of the truth he spoke, and Nahla, the 12 year old who will be writing about real life heroes (and her grandmother). I loved Spoiler: possible spoiler the confrontation on the church steps . I hope many people who need to find more compassion for people who live differently than themselves will read this book.
