A whole extra day!
Are you ready for it? It usually throws me out but I'm happy to hang on to this Feb for another day, it's like we just started a normal summer although technically it's the end so it feels like a treat more than merely catching up on the earth's orbiting around the sun thing.

Are you happy with a whole day every 4 yrs OR would you prefer to just have a few seconds added to every other day of the year?

It has some historically interesting but odd traditions like the women being allowed to propose and if turned down they are rightfully owed a present or pairs of gloves (!?!). It feels like because it's only once every 4 years it should be celebrated and be bigger than Xmas, but we haven't marked it in any special way (that i can remember anyway), have you? Do you? What have you done to mark the 29th of Feb?

This sounds like a good idea to me

It is also known as "Sadie Hawkin's day" based on a comic strip of Lil' Abner and based on the Irish tradition of an Irish lassy being able to propose marraige

from the web:
"There's a common misconception that February 29th (better known as Leap Day) is Sadie Hawkins Day. Although that isn't the case, February 29th does hold significance for women thanks to an old Irish tradition called St. Bridget's Complaint, which granted women permission to propose marriage on that day."

I love it.. I think I will watch Leap Year again with Amy Adams & Matthew Goode

Awww @cfile - you took me back...We celebrated Sadie Hawkins Day when I was in High School. We had a dance every year where the girls asked the boys. It was the only dance I was allowed to attend, lol! (Well, with permission:giggle)

Yup.. I never went to any dances in school but I remember them having the Sadie Hawkins dance when I was in Jr High :)

No special traditions but there is one leap day I will never forget. My aunt passed away on 2/29/96. So this year we can actually honor the anniversary of her death. So she's only been gone "6 years" instead of 24. :hehe

This year though, my town is celebrating "One Giant Leap Day" by having as many people as possible (hoping to break a Guinness record) dressed as an astronaut. It's going to be too cold for me to attend to even just take photos so I'll just check out the ones a friend will post on FB. This is just another event of the 50th Anniversary Celebrations the town has had for the last year.

We did too. I got "married" to the one I attended with a good friend of mine. I still have the marriage license. He is a doctor in town now and has a lovely wife, 2 children and 2 grandkids. His wife, and both kids are also doctors.

I don't really do anything to mark this day, although I think it's interesting that we manipulate time this way. I mean, time is time, right? But somehow we manage to "add" a day or take away minutes? LOL It's fascinating, really.

Just think about how our calendar would look if this hadn't been done all these years. Mind boggling to think that there could be the possibility that December could be hot and July be cold weather because of the shift.

One of my old friends had her son on Leap Day almost 8 years ago. So technically, his second birthday is tomorrow.

We don’t do anything in particular on Leap Day. Tomorrow we’ll be outside in the cold air at a football game. It’s really just another day.

My dad's dad was born on February 29, 1904 ... so tomorrow he would be 116 years old, but have only had 29 birthdays. My sisters and I were fascinated by his only every 4th year birth day when we were kids.

We had Sadie Hawkins dances when I was in junior and senior high school (7th-12th). I forgot about getting married which I did each year. I think we just got cheap gold rings (plastic curtain rod rings). We dressed up like "country bumpkins" too ... um, that's probably un-PC to say nowadays though ... like these kids are:

We did too, Amanda. The girls asked the boys. It was so much fun.

We dressed like "country bumpkins" as well which wasn't hard since there is lots of farm land in the area and our decorations were like yours... lots of hay bales. If I remember right, we got "horseshoe nail rings" that looked something like this:

Lol that's my normal down under anyway! Astronaut suits sounds cool but very random - is there some historic tie btwn your area & the space race?

Nothing special over here. But I'm soooooo ready for February to be over. I'm tired of the cold. I feel like my family has been non-stop sick this winter. I'm so ready for Spring. For me, February always seems like it's the longest month of the year (ironic!), but I'm just so done with being cold. It's right about this time that I seriously consider moving back to FL.

I was 36 weeks pregnant on Leap Day, 2008. I just kept telling Brody to stay in all day long. I didn't know what I'd do with a Leap baby! He stayed in 2 more weeks & all was fine.

Tomorrow, Jamie has a dentist appointment. So, the plan is to hit the Farmer's Market early, then head to the appointment. Haircuts for the 3 of us, are also planned.

Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon was from my town. 2019 was the 50th anniversary of the moon walk and the town has been celebrating for over a year. The town motto is "First on the Moon".

I knew Neil and his parents. His parents were very good friends of my grandparents. Both of my parents also knew him. My dad was the same age and Mom knew him through her parents. He was the nicest man and his parents were adorable.

I'm with Liz! The only celebrating I'm doing is February being over! I'm ready to head in to March and more spring-like things. I'm done with cold and dreary and winter.
