Laptop Specs

@rach3975 - its only either 500 or 512gb, can't remember which to be honest so it is a downgrade and something I'm a bit worried about but I'm sure there are ways around it at least for awhile

Eight weeks to save up for it is great!

It's only 8ish weeks because I'm in a position to cut down on all other spending to get something....I don't know when this laptop will die and having a working machine is top priority even if it wasn't for scrapping reasons

I could only afford my replacement laptop as my mum left me a little bit of money when she died before Christmas :( My alternative had been waiting for an interest free purchase plan to become available so I could spread the cost over 6-12 months.

But, yes, the costs have increased a LOT! My old laptop was around £700 seven years ago, 17" screen, i5, 1TB storage and with a dvd drive. 17" screens with 1TB storage are like hen's teeth nowadays and totally impossible to find with a dvd drive. I just had to pay £1300 for essentially the same spec as before, but with i7 and no dvd writer. Sigh. I kept trying to save up last year, but with divorce and house sale/purchase fees it was a losing battle.

Could you switch to a desktop computer? Seems to me they are cheaper than laptops.

Well over recent time prices and availability of laptops have become a real issue and my laptop is being more and more temperamental (took over an hour for it to stop grinding and work when turned on yesterday) so my best friend has twisted my arm to do a custom build pc which she will build for me (her whole family is technology savvy and built their own computers). It’s still going to cost me $1600-1700 or so but I’ll a better speccd machine and get a lot better value out of it.

I had to be realistic in saying a) the only reason I’ve only considered laptops previously is it’s what I’ve known & used, b) I was being “lazy” in the sense that I didn’t want to move to my desk and be stuck there working, c) I probably only need to be mobile once or twice a year if that and the last time was over 2 years ago now.

I’m hoping end of this month/beginning of next I’ll have the money to give to my friend so she can start ordering the pieces and construct it for me.

Well yesterday my friend listened to a clip of the “grinding noise” my laptop was making on start up and asked how much I had saved as she was super concerned (I was too believe me) about it. I said I had $xxxx and said that by today I’d have $200 more - still about $400 short but she has offered to help me out by using “buy now pay later” as long as I pay her back asap which I will.

So in the next couple of weeks I’ll have a brand new gaming level PC with AMD Ryzen 5 5600G 6 Core / 12 Threads, up to 4.4GHz Max Boost, Socket AM4, Radeon Graphics. 16MB Cache, 65W TDP, Wraith Stealth Cooler, 16gb of RAM (upgradeable to 32gb if I want later down the track), 500gb HDD exclusively for programs, 2TB HDD (with the ability for another 2TB HDD if needed), 4gb dedicated graphics. There’s a tonne of other stuff my friend has linked but don’t really understand it all.

That sounds like a fabulous setup Jennifer!! It's similar to what we are looking at for Munchkin. You probably won't notice the split drives with one for programs and one for stuff, but it's really nice internally. I love that your RAM will be upgradeable later if you want. I think Cheryl uses 32 GB of RAM, but I'm still on 16GB and my computer handles scrapping just fine with no issues with programs.

@bestcee, I'm quite happy with 16gb to start with anyway. I only went up to 16gb from 8gb back in July last year which was great to start with but I think any advantages went down the drain with the issues I've been having the last few months

I'm glad you are on the road to getting this sorted out. Not having a computer can be stressful for more reasons than scrapping! I know you do a lot of job hunt stuff using it so having a stable system will make it much less stressful for those reasons alone.

I'm hoping to get RAM added to my system soon. Just need to be patient... when the tech guy works for free, you go with his schedule! Right now I only have 8GB which is why I have minor issues at times.

Yay for a new computer!! I'm sure you will love how fast it is!!

I have no idea what mine has, lol. I know it's a gaming computer (has pretty lights on the tower that apparently you can change), but my son wanted to upgrade so I bought it off him 2 years ago.

well after about a week's delay I am now using my new PC. I haven't scrapped on it yet as I'm only at the stage of finishing installing programs and getting backblaze data downloaded

5 weeks later and I'm finally set up. Hoping now that I have all my photos on here I'll be back scrapping in no time.....just have to find that missing mojo somewhere
