Doesn't matter if it's journal cards with lines like some of the ones in this pack

or brushes/stamps with lines like this

I can never seem to get my journaling to sit on the lines properly or be spaced out vertically so it looks right. Does anyone have any tips or tricks to help me? I use Photoshop Elements 15.

Check out the leading for your type. It is easy to increase and decrease the space. I’m away from home so can’t give you screen shots at the moment.

@Iowan I have a feeling I've had a play with that before, might have to have another look. I know for certain I've played with font size and that hasn't been the answer so far

I first adjust the size of the font to fit between the lines, then I adjust the spacing between the lines so it hits the same on each line (I usually look at the bottom of an o or a on each line).

I pick the background colour and paint out the lines. It's easier for me to just layer the type on without changing the leading. I always have so much to say I can't get all the words to fit.

The alternative is to add a line at a time, like I did with this one.

I use Affinity Publisher for journaling, and it's really easy to adjust the leading, line spacing and text kerning etc with it being a desk top publisher. Sounds like you can adjust some of those things in Photoshop. Different fonts have different default leading etc so you might find that trying different fonts will give you the right fit.

This is how I do it too.

And if it still doesn't look good - I just try another font.

Can't believe I never thought of doing this! That would certainly work for journal cards.

I also have just journaled one line at a time so that it works on the lines if I did not want to deal with tackling spacing and leading.

Jennifer, I don't have Photoshop Elements but I imagine the commands are similar. I hope this helps.

When you use the type tool in PSE (I think I have 14 but 15 won't be too much different), the leading will change the space between the lines for you. I test out different font sizes and leadings until it's close. That will usually work, but if it's not quite right, I'll click on the transform tool and then drag the type layer vertically until it fits better. That will distort the type a tiny bit as well, but then I can get the journaling to line up exactly.
