and I feel all jittery inside about it! It will have to last me a loooong time, so I want to make the right decision, but I don't want to get a really expensive one. This will be my very first dSLR, and I'm leaning towards the Rebel. I have no intention of ever turning photography into a business; I just want to take better pictures of my life. Which means I am not spending more than $600. Will I regret it if I go with this one? Would a Nikon D3000 be better and worth the extra expense? Remember, I'm just a beginner, and learning to shoot on manual is something I want to learn, but I don't need a lot of bells and whistles.

HOW IS A GIRL SUPPOSED TO MAKE THIS DECISION IN TIME FOR HER INLAWS TO BRING IT OUT IN THREE WEEKS???

Yay for shiny new cameras!! LOL! My sister has the D3000 and she loves it! I have the D90, and I love it! I'm a Nikon girl, but for no other reason than nostalgia. My Dad had a Nikon when we were growing up. It used film of course, but I always just loved the feel of that old thing. I know plenty of people who have and love their Canon's. I don't think you could go wrong with either! Can't wait to see all of the pretty pictures you take! :)

I would go with the Canon and get yourself a 50 1.8 to go with it, the kit lenses are horrible on both Canon and Nikon's and I learned on a rebel and it was super easy (not that there is anything wrong with Nikon..you just have much better/inexpensive lens choices with Canon's). If you are just starting out a 50 1.8 is a great lens to learn on and then upgrade to an 85 when you are ready :)

Oooh, yeah. Which ever you get, you have to get a nifty 50!! Mine stays on my camera!

I started out on a Rebel as well. You really can't go wrong with it. Congrats on the DSLR - that's SO exciting!! :)

Oh, Kellie, my heart just skipped a beat for you!! so excited.
And, you know my preference is a Nikon, just b/c that is what I have and love.
and I third or fourth the recommendation of a 50 mm lens. I think you can get one for either one for about $100ish.
Yay!!!! Can't wait to hear what you decide!

So excited for you. I don't think you could go wrong with either. I used the original Canon rebel for about 6 years and it served me well. Good luck in picking and can't wait to see you rocking it. I do agree about the kit lens though. I would definitely go with just the camera body and the nifty 50, which ever route you decide.

Oh, Kellie, my heart just skipped a beat for you!! so excited.

Well, you should know that I'm getting a camera instead of a baby. {sob} We've decided to wait to adopt, so Joel said I could use a little of the money to buy a camera so that I'll stop crying about it all the time, lol. Adoption is still in the plans, just not in the next couple of years. : (

I don't really understand the lens thing. {I'll learn, I promise.} Is this the one I should get? No, wait. It's this one, right?

Oooh you lucky girl!

I've got the Canon T1i and it's pretty good, although I wish I had the better lens. Someday though. I'm a Canon girl. :)

How exciting! I agree with everyone else about the 50mm - can't go wrong with that lens. I have a Nikon d90 and love it. The second lens link in your post is the right one.

Um... enter dummy me... so I've heard lots of people talk about 50mm lenses before and I'm confused. This doesn't zoom at all, right? How can you stand it? If it's so inexpensive, maybe I should just get one and try it. I have a 14mm-45mm and a 40mm-150mm and I still find myself wanting more range for sports events and stuff like that.

Kellie... I'm so excited for you getting a camera. Sorry that means putting adoption on hold for a bit, but still very exciting! by the way, I have a super old Olympus DSLR and I've wanted to upgrade for awhile too, but I can never decide which way to go (canon vs. nikon) so I just keep plugging along with my old beast. :)

Congrats Kellie! A new camera is SO exciting!!! I have a Canon & love it. I don't think you can go wrong with either the Canon or Nikon. They are both great cameras. I agree with the others that you can skip the kit lens & just buy the body + the 50mm. I learned on the Canon Rebel with the 50mm.

Sorry this means bigger life plans will have to wait. {{{hugs}}}

Ooooh yay Kellie! This is exciting! I hope that you have lots of fun choosing your new camera and then playing with it!!

Kellie I am so excited for you! I also agree with the 50mm lens, it is great. I am just wondering why you aren't buying it in Malaysia though, I thought it would be cheaper (we found out we are moving to KL at the end of the year)

I'm a Nikon girl, but really...either is just fine. Go and try them both out. Feel them in your hands, shoot some pics...you have to feel them!

get the 50 mm lens too. It stays on my camera all the time! I do need a new lens, but you've got to have the 50!

i've got the canon rebel ... i've had it for about 5 years and i've enjoyed it - although i still need to learn manual mode (hanging my head in shame!! boo!) .... i've got a 50 mm 1.4 lens and also a zoom lens - but no idea which one ...

you'll LOVE whatever you get! even for someone like me, who has NO IDEA how to really use it, it's great!

Kellie I'm SO excited for you!!! And maybe a wee bit jealous :giggle I can't help you in the decision making because i don't have a clue... BUT i'm sure you can't go wrong either way! Have fun!
