How green is your thumb? Pad Patter 11/8

One of my friends posted the other day that she just planted her garlic for next year and that got me thinking how inept I was with all things green, lol. My parents have a garden with so many veggies and fruits. I really am jealous of their gardening powers. I think if I maybe put more effort into it, we would have a garden but that seems like too much for me to keep up with. The only thing I have been able to keep a live was an orchid that wound up dying when we went on vacation.

Do you have a green thumb? Are you able to keep plants alive and thriving? Do you have a garden? If so tell us about it.
 
I am definitely NOT a green thumb. Lol. I buy the flowers for the yard in the spring and plant them and then it's my hubbys job to keep them alive all summer. Ha ha! I also know exactly which plants I can keep alive in the house (drought tolerant) and which ones I'm guaranteed to kill. I have one planter from my hubby's Dad's funeral that I have been super duper vigilant about keeping alive. But also... why do people give plants at a funeral. It's so much pressure to keep them alive...
 
I loved having plants in my apartments 30 to 40 years ago. I had a few that were around for awhile. I fondly remember "Monster". It was some type of philodendron that I bought in a floor planter with some wood (about 12 inches tall) for it to grow around and up. It got so big I had to put a yard stick in there so it would keep going up. It was with me through 4 different apartments and even made the trip with me when I moved back to my hometown. It lasted through another apartment and then the house where I'm at now. So I probably had it about 8 to 9 years.

I also brought a hens and chicks planter with me when I moved home. It got placed in the front flower bed and it took off growing all over the place. Loved it. Tried transplanting a few of them to another spot but they didn't take. I've since had landscaping done and the majority of them are gone but the planter with 1 or 2 is still sitting out there. I did buy some for my back patio this summer but they didn't even last a day. Darn chipmunk got to them. Ticked me off!

But now, nope. No plants in the house unless they are plastic. Never been into gardening things that you eat. Actually I dislike playing in dirt these days. For one, my knees and back can't handle getting down/up to do any outside work!
 
I have never tried planting flowers or a garden of any kind. Even the few bushes we have at our house are just the ones from the original landscaping that have been tough enough to survive. The only time I've kept houseplants alive was when I had them at my office job. They were all across the top of my cubicle and I would water them on my breaks on a regular basis. They were all thriving there, but when I brought them home after I was laid off they bit the dust pretty quickly.
 
I do not consider myself a green thumb, but I have gotten pretty good at keeping plants alive and thriving inside my home. I have at least 15 inside. My hubby and kids do the garden outside. In fact, my husband was so frustrated with last year's garden that he turned it over to the kids this year...and we had the best garden ever! Haha.

I would like to be a garden person but it really comes down to time.
 
I am so bad, I have a message on Alexa to remind me to water my only inside plant. “Feed me , Seymour, feed me.” (a la Little Shop of Horrors)

Outside, on the other hand, I have very nice gardens. I replanted, with a lot of help, half of the front yard last spring and summer.
 
I have a green thumb with most anything outdoors. I have lots of big flower beds and grow some veggies in pots because I really don't have a good sunny flat spot in my yard for a garden. Indoor plants are a different story...I kill them all lol.
 
There isn't a speck of green on my thumb! I've never been good at growing things, and I don't care enough to put in the effort. I've been given a few plants as gifts, and now that I've raised children it feels like plants should be easy. It never works out like that, LOL. In my defense, I think our house isn't well set up for plants--the windows start about a foot off the ground, so you can't put a table or plant there without blocking the windows. Because of how the house faces, the sunlight doesn't reach far enough inside for us to put plants in the places where they'd be convenient.
 
I always wanted some African violets on my kitchen window sill but I killed them with over watering. I have some amazing orchids there now - so they enjoy the little bit of sunlight and once a week watering. I have orchid green thumb - not for other plants though. I seem to have exactly the amount of neglect that makes orchids thrive.
 
I don't really mess with plants at all. Inside, we don't have live plants because of Holly Belle, who is apparently very drawn to any greenery or floral items and she chews them up.

Outside, my husband is the green thumb. He has potted plants and flower beds, and this year it looks so awesome. I'm glad the weather is cooling off, but I'm not looking forward to the first frost that kills back all our tropical plants.
 
I love gardening and had so much fun this spring when we put our front garden in at our new home. Our mums are gorgeous and actually, since we haven't had a freeze yet, even the hydrangeas are still pretty. Sadly, we had to take the hanging ferns down. They're totally annual. Dang it!

That is something else my mom and dad do, they propagate African violets. Dad does the leaf cuttings and they have so many of them. Mom always gives us some when we visit and I hate that I am going to kill them when they come live with us. I can’t say no though because she gets upset with me. Maybe next time I will just tell her but they will DIE!!!

Sherlock also eats all the plants that happen to survive my lack of care. He ate all the leaves off our mini bamboo and for awhile it was just sticks. He does thankfully leave the cactus alone but sometimes I do find it knocked over in the window sill.
