Hi everybody! I would like to ask you some help. I am 33 and since 3 weeks I started to learn how to ride a horse. Never before. I really enjoy it! But I would like to know more about horses can anybody recommend me books or sites where I should start learning? I read that there is a way of communication with horses that is without any violence just by connecting minds. So that a horse wants cooperate in his own will. Kind of how the native people did it a hundred years ago…. Can anyone help me? Thanks.

I don't know of any sites or books, but I used to ride all the time as a kid. My Mom, my sister and I all had our own horse/pony and would ride almost every day. We never used whips or anything like that. just a squeeze with the legs to get them to move a bit faster and a gentle tug on the reins to slow them back down. We also used to see how far we could go without pulling on the reins to turn our horses. You can put your inside leg back a bit and push near their rump and get them to turn that way too. :) We'd ride bareback and without a bridle sometimes around our pasture area. I haven't ridden in YEARS now though. I hope you continue to enjoy it! :)

I used to ride horse as well - we had two horses growing up and my sisters and I showed them. Quarter horses. I would say your best information will be online, but otherwise your local library will probably have a section on horses that you can check out! Have fun with it!

I rode as a kid and was a member of the US Pony Club. It may be mostly aimed at children and teens but I learned so much about riding, tack, horses and caring for horses, etc. There may be some resources on their website?? It's been so long for me, this makes me want to ride again!

Thanks everyone! I got some help already from a friend. So I started to read Monty Roberts book about horses and their communication. really interesting! Did you hear about him and his work? There is a Hungarian Instructor she learned by him in the USA. I a m thinking about going and visiting a course of her. Do you think it would be useful? There will be a big horse event next weekend at Hungary we decided to go and have a look. I want to see some other horse types. I am very small and I think the horses are very big at the place I started learn riding. I want to have a look on the original Hungarian horses (they have a sizes like courter horses). I am very excited and I definitely want to learn horse riding! Thank you for all the tips!
