My name is Jan, and I am a photo-holic. I love to take photos. Lots of photos. Lots and lots and lots of photos. I'm buried in photos. And like a good Mom, I love each and every one of them.
Here's my problem. This summer we took a 15-day trip to Scandinavia. A trip of a lifetime for my family. During that time we took over 3,500 photos. SCARY! And I want to scrap them all. I know I can't, but I want to. I'm also journaling a lot about this trip, more than I have ever journaled before, so it will be a travel journal scrapbook. Even though I'm a multiple-photo-per-page scrapper, I'm already up to page 13 and I'm only mid-way through day 2.
So, do I:
make one album for each of the three countries we visited, ($$$ ) allowing me to showcase lots of the beautiful scenery and places we saw with page-filling photos, - or -
try to squeeze what I can into one 100-page album (eek!)
Any thoughts? I kinda want to figure this out before I get too much farther.
this is me thinking out loud and is also applicable to myself, still scrapping and wading thru photos from our once in a lifetime trip to England and parts of France in 2013... it's a once in a lifetime trip; i love these photos all the more b/c of that; i will scrap probably 80-90% of them and i'll pay for a few albums b/c otherwise they sit on my EHD and my stories die with me/us - i've got my pages that i've scrapped so far sorted into folders that are named by country & region/locale so i can upload them in some sort of order but i'm not doing day-by-day b/c that would take some of the fun from my scrapping... good luck and enjoy reliving your trip, every time u scrap/journal
For me, I'd break it down into areas. I'd find the huge album kinda overwhelming in a way to both create and look at if that makes sense? Or break it down into 3 day segments? If that works with the flow. I think I'd make a couple smaller albums that all go together rather than one huge one.
Don't stop! Don't stop taking photos!! perhaps...you can do covers that are a collage? and a few filler pages? or have those cool frames that have photos in them that change? and fill it up!
But keep snapping!

Don't delete the photos. But don't feel compelled to scrap them all, either. With that many photos, you likely have a lot of very similar photos. You can cull those from the list to scrap.
I would try to do one collage page per day and then maybe a few pages with larger or favorite photos to highlight some specific photos.
I would take my time and scrap as much of the photos as I wanted to scrap. Those memories deserve not being shoved into a small space. Now, if they all fit in one book, great, but if not, just let your creativity guide you. If there were extras that I wanted to include but didn't need their own page or explanation, I would make collage pages.
If you need templates or a visual, I have a couple that might give you some ideas. Like the facing layout would a large photo or larger photos scrapped, and then the other side would have multiple photos.
Good luck and enjoy reliving that trip of a lifetime!
Often you will be showing your books to more than one person, so smaller books make sense. It's so cool you are journaling about it. It will really help you remember such a special time.
Shutterfly's upper limit is 120 pages! Keep scrapping! I haven't counted how many of the 4,000 photos that I scrapped from my London trip, but I ended up with 102 pages.
I agree with the smaller books. Personally, I would lose it trying to make it in to one book. Making smaller ones will give you a sense of accomplishment as you're going along. I also love Cheryl's idea of having larger focus photos on one page with a page full of smaller ones facing. I also wouldn't try to scrap them all. Like Molly said, there are probably similar ones that you can choose the best from. Take your time and enjoy each page...relive the trip Good luck!!!
Hmmm... with that many photos, I would probably do one of my "photo dump" books that I've done in the past. No thinking, just pictures on the photo book company's plainest templates (I use MyPublisher for these and wait for their free extra pages sale). This gets my photos out into the world in a form that people (and you!) can enjoy paging through... then take your time and enjoy the scrapping and storytelling with more detailed books. Maybe with knowing that the photos ARE printed somewhere, it might not seem so critical to scrap them all. I would probably vote for a book per country since you'll get to hold printed pages in your hand faster that way (one of the main reasons I print 3 PL books a year... can't wait a whole year to hold my pages!).
I did "photo dump" books for the years before I started project life... every photo I took those years (big camera, point and shoot and phone photos) are all in these books. I love to look through them. And I also love not feeling rushed with scrapping those photos (which I've been working on as time and inspiration permits).
I like Tracie's photo dump book idea. I'd never thought of that, but it sounds great. I've got several Disney trips and 2 Hawaii Trips that I'm slowing scrapping through, but hubby wants to see the photos. Next time shutterfly has a free book, I'm gonna make a dump book, so I won't feel guilty about slowly scrapping these. Thanks for the idea Tracie @tkradtke.
I am also photoholic. I make yearbooks for our entire year. Started when my son was born. Blurbs upper limit is over 400....I know...I have 3 year books so far with between 350 and 420 12 x 12 pages. Nuts! Right?....but I find it hard to delete pics....like u...I love them all.
I try to delete similar ones and use the rest. I have lots of photo heavy pages. I say go for it and do as many pages as needed! I did 200 pages for disney and sanibel...2 week vacation.
Smaller books would be nice to showcase each place.
I've read everyone's comments and I'll comment tomorrow. Gotta get up 0-dark-hundred to get the girl to the rink. Thanks for all the feedback - I really do appreciate it!
I came home with 950ish photos from a 6 day trip to Portland. I am on page 12 of my PL app style album (only up to day 2!), and an additional handful of pages I've scrapped more "traditionally", too. I feel your pain. Sorry I can't offer suggestions though.
A pun is not fully matured until it is full groan.

Do you have Lightroom or another program that allows you to flag or rate your pictures? That would help you sort out your favorites that you want to be sure to scrap.
We had a 23(?) day cruise round the British Isles and Scandinavia in my first year of scrapping. Since I didn't have a lot of technique experience, it was pretty simple and that was a blessing. As I was actually scrapping at sea, I made a page for each city with the colors of the countries' flags and incl the flags. I kept myself to the limit of a page a day for cost initially! I actually had it ready for Shutterfly not long after we got home. Sometimes, the simplest ways get things done. It was also an album I had fun with and didn't agonize over....just sayin'.
I'd make a lot of little books, that way I could print and feel accomplished and it would push me to create more pages for the next book. A little reward. Don't stress, and take it a layout at a time. I'd go for simple and photo centric!
