The files on my EHD? I am going to load everything up on my new computer, but I don't know how to access the EHD. I know... that sounds odd. It does not show up in the File Explorer, and I have a feeling because I used it with a Mac. Any advice?

My files are just jpg, png, etc.... not special to any software, but the EHD was only used for a Mac.

Ps.... I can't type yet from the new laptop, it's so weird. :giggle

i have no mac experience but that just strikes me as weird... so your going from mac to a pc and it won't read your old mac files from your ehd?

The mac recognizes it right? Usually it's in properties.

I don't know what is called on a mac, on a pc i can see it in the properties. Google said disk utilty? On a mac?

It's actually not as weird as you may think. Once upon a time, Mac used a apple file system, and windows used a windows file system and the two were not interchangeable. Then, mac adapted to let one of then be read only, and the other it would work with. But for Windows i believe you still need a program that will read the apple file system.
Annoying, right?

Ps: usually your ehd maker has a help article on their site letting you know how to make an ehd talk to both systems. Like this one from Western Digital.

I think it won't read it. For now, I'm using OneDrive and transferring files and information. But, I really need to figure out how to make it work with the new Laptop! Ugh!

At least I can move some of my pictures. That is a good thing

I think it won't read it.

If you go into 'my computer' on the PC, you should see it connected. You should be able to open it from there. If you can't, then i would bet it's formated in the Mac one - HFS.

My new Mac wouldn't recognize my EHD that I used on my old Mac. I had to get a new updated EHD and transfer all my stuff to it before I could use it on my new Mac. Very frustrating. Hope you figure it all out.

Thank you all! I think it's written in the HFS that Courtney mentioned. (Boo!) But, I will slowly figure out a way to get what I want at least on this laptop. I think I have another EHD that I can make a Windows/Mac Compatible, and then move files that way. I'm also going to try an Ethernet transfer via network tonight - gotta print the directions and DH will help!

Thank you all... bear with me, I might have more questions! :beat

Haha! I need all the luck you can send!! :P Good think St. Paddy's Day is tomorrow!

I'm going to try a direct ethernet transfer of files tonight. Fingers crossed everyone!

@jk703 Jenn, I don't know if this will help or not, but I just bought a new EHD from Western Digital that I have to re-format before I can use on my Mac. I just Googled how to do it and it sounds really easy. Maybe yours has to be re-formatted back to PC?

Thanks for trying, Nancy! Yes... I would have to reformat... but then I lose all the documents, images and anything stored on that EHD currently. I need to get the files off before re-formatting. :( Then I can and will to a version that can be read for both Mac and PC!
@NancyBeck

Oh what a pain. I didn't even think of that when you said you were switching to a PC ... yeah, I think the EHDs can be formatted for MAC only, PC only or the Combo option (where they will work with both). Hope it does not take you too long to move everything Jenn - so you can get it reformatted. What a chore.

Thanks all... inch by inch I will move forward. I at least have my 2017 photos on the new PC... and will try to get some of my scrap items over - styles, actions, etc. Then I can at least scrap and slowly move the other photos and files over after.

Keep looking on the bright side, right!?

oh the joys of computers! can't live with em, can't live without em! Good luck on getting everything moved over and working for both mac and pc.

I had a similar issue with a lot of files that were created on a Mac. Once I was done with a kit or whatever I would move it to my eHD. Then I got a new laptop with a different operating system. The Mac files won't open on the new laptop. I was able to save some by opening on the old laptop and going into the properties to change some settings but a lot of my files are gone. Just about all of Jaimee's stuff that I had I couldn't save. Makes me so sad. :(
