Do you have any weird pet peeves when it comes to grammar and the internet?

For the most part I’m not too picky about how people type…I use a lot of short hand and I know I use really weird punctuation and whatnot…but one thing I have been seeing a TON lately that has totally been driving me nuts is the use of sales when it should be sells.

It drives me absolutely batty!

EVERYTHING but I try not to judge. I keep my neuroses to myself. :) I just have this tiny wish that everyone would try to use the words they're, too and you're correctly.

haha. I really don't have any peeves about it, but I notice grammatical errors a lot. I am good at grammar, but when I'm in a forum, I really don't pay too much attention and probably screw things up too, lol.

I usually type something out as I'm thinking it. Capitalization used to really bother me, but now, not so much. You're, your, our, are, too, and to are the only things that really bother me now. My husband is the WORST about too and to, but after 10 years, I just expect it and *try* to accept that he's just not going to get it right. :)

I have several facebook friends who constantly mess up are and our. And at least 1 has a college degree. Really.

EVERYTHING but I try not to judge.

This. My old boss was an English major, and he turned me into the grammar police in a really bad way. I try very hard not to be too freakish about it, but sometimes its hard. I think my worst pet peeve is lack of use of punctuation and/or paragraphs. Run-on sentences make my face twitch to the point I can't even reply.

And yes, I have been known to post, see a typo, and edit to fix it. At least I'm picky about my own posts too!

I was a copy editor for years so I have lots of peeves! I really hate when I miss my own typos.

All of the above, and also the use of "I" and "me"....when to use it.

I try to remember that English is not the first language of everyone, and even if it is, some of the smartest people I know can't spell worth beans. I correct them in my head and move on. If I'm typing something from my phone, there are going to be errors.

I really do hate the use of "U" or "R". It's cute when it's used in a title on a layout, but I hate that kind of short hand if someone is texting me or commenting on Facebook. My husband does it, but only because he has the hardest time texting (and he knows I prefer it), so at least he tries.

in forums I am terrible for grammar...as you can probably see! But in real life..letters etc I am a stickler. And spelling anywhere has to be correct. I can't stand typos!
In forums i tend to write as i think so i use ........ way too much! Those are my little pauses as my brain catches up! :giggle

From others, it is only spelling that I notice. And incorrect use of words such as some of you mentioned. But I don;t let it bother me unless it is used in some professional capacity....ie seeing typos in ads/ newsletters etc

oh and that damn semi-colon always gets me! I don't know why but I always hit ; instead of ' so at the end of my typing I have to go back and correct them all. The times that I don;t is because I am too tired or sick of correcting myself.

Right now? The biggest one is "lose" vs "loose". Seriously. People, you can't loose your child in a crowd.

Also, it's not "could of": it's COULD'VE. It's not "should of": it's SHOULD'VE. Makes me want to bang heads when I see it. Use your contractions, for heaven's sake!

well you could loose them in a crowd...I would deliberately set them loose! :giggle

But yeh that one is really frustrating.

yes, yes yes... I agree with all of these! I have noticed the sale/sell thing a lot lately... just today a friend of mine posted about how they are going to "sale" their house.

When it bugs me the most is when I get typos like this from a professional... like stuff sent home from teacher at school, or last month when a local politician was handing out fliers full of typos! C'mon people, at least have someone proofread for you.

It bugs me when someone consistently misuses words like their/they're, your/you're, are/our, to/too.

Now this isn't an internet thing, but it really gets under my skin when you get a business letter with really bad typos. I recently got a letter from my former employer's HR department that referenced the email address of someone else in HR. There were not just one but TWO typos in this ONE email address....one typo in the name and one typo after the @. And this letter was from the Director of HR! Geesh.

That's hysterical Sara! Now every time I see the word alot I'm going to think of that crazy Alot creature. I really like that Alot. He's kinda cute. :p

ooh thanks sara! I forgot about that blog! i guess I'm an eagle... the shift key is too difficult for me :giggle

I am a bit of a grammarian myself, although I try to let it pass in the forum. However, incorrect use of apostrophes gets me every.single.time. Use an apostrophe to show possession; use an apostrophe in a contraction, but please leave all rogue apostrophes at home. LOL
