Girl Scout Cookies|Pad Patter 2.24

Haven't bought them for over 30 years. Thin Mints were always my favorites and evidently in my area they changed bakeries and they just never tasted the same after that. Never been tempted to buy since.

 

Ha! This is my daughter’s first year in Scouts. We just picked more up today. There are evidently 2 kinds of s’mores cookies. I had someone who lives 2 hours from here order some from us because ours are better than the s’mores they have there.

I have not bought them in years. I was a Girl Scout and too many of them were my favorite!! I always loved the shortbread the peanut butter sandwhich ones, the coconut semoas and then of course we had to have mint. Hubby and I retired over 5 years ago. No longer have to worry about co-workers selling the cookies for their kids. I love them but I might as well walk around with boxes of GS Cookies attached to my hips as that is where they would end up if I ate them, LOL! Oh goodness they are my downfall so I avoid them like the plague. I always feel guilty this time of year when I grocery on the weekends, as when i am leaving Walmart the Girl Scouts are selling them outside the door. I have to wear blinders ! LOL

 

I don't buy them but we always wind up with a box or two that people give us. Samoas are my favorite and my husband likes Thin Mints.

I KNOW the money goes to a good cause, but WOW do I feel like the cookies are overpriced. It could just be me...

 

My husband buys a box or two whenever he sees the girls selling them. First of all, he LOVES them, second of all, he just can't say no. LOL

 

Love, love thin mints ever since I sold them door to door 62 years ago! Yes, s’mores are wonderful. We seem to only buy them when the girls are camped out in front of a grocery store since we don’t have any scouts in the family.

 

Absolutely thin mints!!! BUT----one of the dollar stores in town sells a thin mint that, I have to confess, taste better than the Girl Scout ones! And they look identical!. Better yet, they are only $1.25 a box!! But if a girl scout knocks on my door I will buy a box to support them, but they are just too expensive for my budget.
I was a Girl Scout when I was young and then became a leader when my oldest joined scouts. I was cookie captain one year and NEVER AGAIN!! My hallway was lined with boxes of cookies from top to bottom. And do you know how easy it is to just grab a box when you're hungry????? I think I owed them my first born when it was time to cash in!!!!

 

I may or may not have purchased 7 boxes of them. Samoas are my favorite with Thin Mints closely behind.

 

BTW, @Lena Gardner is a troop leader, and her daughter is a Girl Scout.

 

There were Girl Scouts at the mall today, at a kiosk. DD said she'd pay with her allowance if we could get some cookies...and I was a mean mom and said No. We had a friend of DS's with us and I didn't want him to feel bad because we were buying cookies. I'm sure we'll get some soon. There are at least 3 Girl Scouts in our neighborhood, so I actually have to be careful and order just 2 boxes from each girl. Otherwise I feel bad if I order from just the first Girl Scout who knocks on the door. It'd be easier if I didn't know the parents lol!

Oh, as for the S'mores cookies: I haven't tried them so I can't say, but I would like to try one! Have you seen the Post brand Honey Maid S'mores cereal? My kids are obsessed.

 

I may have 143 boxes in my garage.... But a few weeks ago it was 424. So far, 1,088 boxes have passed through my garage, just for my daughter's sales. Yup, got a Girl Scout daughter. We have 2 booths left and I am praying we sell the last 143, so I can go to Orlando next Friday without cookies in the garage.

There are two bakers in the USA, ABC Bakers and Little Brownie Bakers. Most of the names you remember, like Tag-a-longs and Samoas are owned by Little Brownie as trademarks. That is why our baker, ABC Bakers has to call them Peanut Butter Patties and Carmel Delights, etc. This is also why there are two Smores. Ours are a graham cracker cookies with a thin layer of marshmallow and then they dip the whole thing in chocolate (personally, I find them rather waxy).

The type of cookies available are determined by the baker then by the local council. So councils near you might have some other kinds. We have gluten-free cookie that is a oatmeal, peanut butter, chocolate chip. It is okay (much better than previous year's "healthy" cookies).

Prices are also set by council. None of the money goes to the national organization, but stays in the local area. About half of the cost goes to the baker, some is admin, some goes to council for maintaining camps, etc. and the rest goes to the girl's troop. Our prices is $4 a box; the troop gets 60 cents per box (less if they chose to also get incentive prizes). There are additional incentives for those selling over 500 boxes per girl. DD could make about $800 for her international trip.

Last year I convinced myself they tasted too processed. This year, I have a weakness for peanut butter sandwiches (Do-si-does) and Thanks-a-lots (shortbread with a layer of chocolate).

 

I have not bought any this year at all. I usually buy 3 or 4 boxes...thin mints only. I love them in the freezer! And then, like @NancyP, I found the similar one at the dollar store and they are really good!! I don't really know anyone with a Girl Scout right now, and I would buy a box or so to support them if I did, but for now I'll stick to the dollar store cookies

 

Frozen Thin Mints are life!

And, I'm the only one in my home that eats them so they are all mine!

My kids like the Peanut Butter Patties. We keep those in the fridge for them.

 

And other helpful (or useless, depending on your feelings on GS cookies). Okay, sometimes business is slow.

There are 40 cookies in the shortbread box, 32 in thin mints, and only 15 in peanut butter patties & caramel delights (Somoas). The number of cookies per serving also changes: 4 for a shortbread, 4 for thin mint, and only 2 for caramel delights and peanut butter patties. Fats: peanut butter patties are way up there - shortbread is the lowest. Sugars - peanut butter patties are the least. Several of the cookies are vegan since our baker does not add milk.

 

Ahhhh, yes! The peanut butter!! Dollar store also has those and they are delicious!! They are just like the Girl Scout ones.

 

being coeliac, there's a limit to what we can buy, and if the guides or scouts round here ever did that I would have to give them a donation instead of buying from them.

 

I used to be a girl scout so we definitely try to support them when we can. That said, I personally haven't bought the cookies in recent years, DH has for us. He's a teacher and tries to support the students in his class and will kindly buy a box. This year he doesn't have a student that is selling cookies so he got some from another teacher that's also a troop leader.
My favorites are the Samoas (which I will still call Caramel Delites) and Tagalongs. Thin Mints go straight into the freezer. I haven't seen the smores ones though...maybe I should be looking!

 

Oh man! I want some S'more cookies. I am actually looking to see if I can find a sale in upstate New York so I can do some cross-border shopping.

I am so jealous of your American cookie varieties. I've tried the mint thins, Do-si-dos (In Canada, they are sold in grocery stores as "Pirate cookies") and Samoas (too sweet, IMHO). Canada, only has 2 varieties. (We also have about 1/10th the population of the US). In the Fall we sell our version of "mint thins." I have tried both Canadian and US mint thins, and while I like US mint thins, I can objectively say that ours are better. Ours have a chocolate-mint cookie, topped with a peppermint patty layer, all coated in chocolate. They are like an After 8 with a chocolate cookie underneath.
Our other cookie variety, which we sell in Spring is a box of chocolate and vanilla sandwich cookies. There is no US equivalent. Half of the box is chocolate, half vanilla. There is a great national debate over which flavour is best. (I am #TeamVanilla). However, we all agree that the current cookies (made by Dare) are not as good as those made by Christie up until the early 2000s.

BTW, if you know of anyone in the Ottawa area looking for either variety of cookie, I know a Girl Guide and a Pathfinder who would be more than happy to take their money.

 

Oh man- I TRY not to buy them because I'm too tempted- but it never fails the hubs will come home with few boxes. His favorite are the pb, mine the samoas. It's interesting about the different bakers/cookie types. who knew!?
