Today is national Fritter Day! I know what one is here but it appears to be different all over. Do you eat them and how do you make them/eat them?

This is blurb from a website I was on:
Fritters come in various forms, from morsels dipped in flavorful batters to bits of dough stuffed or filled with delicious surprises. All of the varieties are deep-fried and served hot with dips, drips, or dustings of seasonings, sweets, or sauces. Cultures all over the world make some kind of fritter. May believe Ancient Romans first consumed fritters. They then introduced them to Europe. Most commonly filled with fruit or cheese, fritters can also be filled with savory meats, seafood, and vegetables.

To us in New Orleans, or me from all over, a fritter is a fried dough coated in sugar (Like a Beignet) or a desert of fried dough stuffed with fruit and coated in a sugar frosting.

I tend to think of them as more savory but was just reading that it can be any little fried morsel kind of thing, even like a beignet (which I love). I am actually a little afraid of deep frying so I don't make anything like this but my mom makes turkey fritters after Thanksgiving which are really yum and she made zeppolis (fried dough) when I was growing up. I discovered that I'm officially old when I started having gall bladder issues so I try to avoid fried things most of the time these days. :lol

Yum I love fritters. I’ve never made them myself. Where I am in Pennsylvania an Apple fritter is kind of like a donut blob with apples and the sugar glaze.

I haven’t been to New Orleans in 20 years but I loved the beignets

When I think of fritters they are like what Laura mentioned... usually I get apple fritters that are sold with the donuts. Yummy!

I love apple fritters, more like a donut like Laura said. There's a local grocery store here that makes the BEST apple fritters!

When I think fritters I think also more donut like fritters.. apple or another fruit but they're yummy

My mom used to make corn fritters and apple fritters back in the day when everyone had a deep fat frier sitting on their counters. I was not a fan, but I ate them because we also (back in the fifties) had to eat everything on our plates. I bet I would like the sweet fritters.

I would love to try homemade fritters. I have only had beignets at Disneyland and apple fritters from donut shops.

I have had apple fritters before but none since I've gone gluten free....I'm a bit wary of trying to convert recipes from regular flour to gluten free at the moment til I'm more confident cooking
