File names in layers

I feel like I may have asked this question before but my search didn't bring anything up so....

I have noticed that when I pull files from the tab area at the top of my canvas and drag them on to my canvas in PSE 15 they come in without their file names - instead they say Layer 1, Layer 2 etc. Is there any way around that or am I missing something really simple?

It does the same for me. I don't know how to change that. Maybe if you use he option "Place embeded" it keeps the name. But I never use that and I don't even know what it means.
Maybe @gonewiththewind Cheryl knows better.

When I want to include several elements or papers at once (when I make paper previews or elements previews for example) and I use the script "load into files into stack" it keeps the name of the original file.
But when I make a page I just open the elements and drag it on my layout and the name becomes only Layer + number indeed.

I hope someone will be able to help better than I can.

if you drag the file itself into your layout it keeps the name. because it is the file you use. if you drag it from one open file to the other you pick the layer itself it keeps that name of the layer and usually if you open a file like a png it only has one single layer and this layers name is always layer. This is how photoshop works. but it seems PSE works the same. I am not sure if there are renaming layer scripts for PSE. Not sure if PSE can handle scripts.
I always drag the files into my canvas with the file name, afterwards I always know what kind of file I have used. But I also work only with smart objects.
What is the Benefit to have all the Layers named Layer1...2..3?

Absolutely none at least to me, I'd rather have the actual file names as my layers so I'll play around with your other suggestions when I'm at my computer in the morning.

even in PSE you can place embedded and it will keep file name.

I no longer have PSE on my laptop but it may be because the file is open in your bin and you drag it up into your workspace the program does not think you need the name of the file as it is in your photo bin? I always use place embedded in both PS CC & PSE. I rarely drag up from photobin if I am using PSE.

@littlekiwi
In PSE, I use file > place and browse file explorer to add items to my layout. This method keeps the filenames as the layer name.

I haven’t found a way in PSE to drag and drop files and keep the filenames as layer names. It’s just one of the limitations of Photoshop Elements.

Thank you both @cfile & @keepscrappin I guess I'll adapt to doing it a little differently. It probably means using Windows Explorer a bit more to help me decide what I'm going to use rather than just opening files in PSE then dragging them across into my canvas.

@keepscrappin and @littlekiwi I don't have PSE currently, so I don't know if this still works, but it used to be if I had the item open (not my layout) and dragged the item down onto my layout in the photobin it would keep the file name?

I gave that a go and it doesn't work unfortunately so I think I'm going to have to use File > Place I think instead

Don't pull your files onto your canvas from the tab area at the top of your canvas. Instead, make sure your photo bin is open and drag up and onto your canvas. That will retain your filename.

It worked that way in PSE 11 and in PSE 18, so I'm hoping that it remained the same in PSE 15.

Here's a video that will show you what I'm talking about:

When I do File>Place Embedded it will automatically open your files.. I then glance through my lilypad designers and pick the paper or element I want and it places in my workspace. Good luck!
